"Genghis Khan" mutton yakiniku joint playing catchy pop music.
Very straight forward - mutton Genghis Khan and / or soba. Alcohol. The restaurant is very very busy. I'm not sure if you can reserve in advance but if yes, you should do so.
I asked to wait for seats and there are outdoor seats (15 - 30 min wait luckily for me).
Again, super busy / popular so they'd already run out of soba noodles and one of the mutton cut options. Meat and veg portions are legit.
Friendly point of advice - there is a cooking instruction sheet which isn't obvious to everyone.

The staff are friendly and can help if you have any questions.
A forewarning and my only gripe is that you will 💯 reek of BBQ mutton when you leave the joint. Don't wear anything that might be hard to clean, or probably wash your hair lol. If your lodge has a fabric spray, I recommend you double dose your jacket etc or you'll be smelling BBQ all of next day while...

We got 2 Jingisukan (1 combo 1 lamb shoulder), side of rice, miso soup, and wine. It was all SO GOOD! It was my first time trying this dish and I was blown away.
You make the food yourself on a skillet. It’s easy, fast and so delicious. They also give you barbecue sauce for dipping and water is self service.
The staff here are sooo friendly and kind. It is a small shop, with a cabin like feel. Very cozy and there were only two men working - Shun + Hikari , who were very attentive, helpful and kind. We were grateful to be there and meet them!
10/10 I would recommend to go here if you’re in Zao Onsen. I would try to go there early as we arrived at 7 (they close at 9) and they sold out after our order. i noticed they had to turn many people away after that. You don’t want to miss this yummy dish, unique experience and meeting the friendly staff!!

Read moreMy husband and I went to Zao for the first time yesterday. It was very snowy (the place where we were born doesn’t snow, maybe it’s just a normal thing here), and we wanted to take a footbath, but unfortunately it wasn’t open. The surroundings are very quiet, only this shop has the lights on. Seeing the owner shoveling snow, he greeted us very friendly and said that the shop would not open until 11 o'clock, but we happened to need to use the washroom and the owner was happy to let us enter the restaurant. Originally, we planned to go down the mountain but finally we stayed and had an early lunch so we had the opportunity to chat with the owner and his lovely wife, enjoyed a cup of wonderful coffee and a bowl of delicious soba noodles, bless they are happy and prosperous! Also having a lovely and healthy baby in this...
