RECOMMEND: I recommend this place for everybody to enjoy it all in one (relatively uncrowded) location: experience Japanese culture, see natural wonders, soak in especially intense onsen, enjoy amazing views and TONS of courses (10 km long run) Stay 1 night!

PROS: Great snow, long panoramic runs (incl. 10 km long run if you plan it correctly) Decent number of challenging (steep and narrow) runs. Not as packed as Nagano You can explore the peak (snow monsters) and actually walk up to the peak marker and enjoy the views Easy access (1 straight bus) from Yamagata station Enjoy real Japanese culture in the onsen town below with regional cuisine, premium beef and very pure onsen (better than other regions imo)

CONS: Can't enjoy the peak/snow monsters when the weather is poor Need to take shinkansen/bus from Tokyo...adding to price Most low elevation runs aren't that great

Have been here 3 times and I still love it. As stated above, the only con is the trip from Tokyo. Try to only go when the weather is clear/sunny since it'd be a shame to miss out on the excellent scenery and snow monsters.

Skiing the 10 km run is awesome - the fun never ends. However, some low elevation runs aren't that great and tend to ice over depending on the time of day/weather/etc.

Lots of ryokans nearby (including onsen for day guests) with very intense onsen; water may look milky, etc. Very sulfuric/strong in a good way - not many places in Japan have this sort of onsen.

I recommend staying 1 night and doing a bit of tourism the next day (Yamadera cliffside temple, picturesque...

Seeing the snow monsters is a site to behold. However, going to the top to ski/snowboard down is probably only worth the effort if you're going for the views. The single run from the highest gondola drop-off point can be crowded and slow. Advice to skiers/snowboarders trying to see the snow monsters on busy days: avoid taking the base to middle gondola, and use other lifts to access the middle to top gondola.

The runs closer to the base of the resort are well kept and are suitable to novice/intermediate skiers/snowboarders. Runs closer to the top can be within the clouds, and wind/visibility can become an issue. On busy days, popular runs may require weaving between fallen bodies for those who are more experienced. Many people tend to stop abruptly, even in slower terrain areas.

For people wanting the visit the mountain for fast lifts and short lines, then the omori and kurohime lifts (both fast 4 person lifts) are recommended. Those who prefer advanced, freestyle, and park experiences will likely enjoy other resorts; however, Zao Onsen is worth visiting for great views and long runs.

Accessing the resort can be done by catching a public bus from Yamagata train station. For equipment rentals, there are many companies in the area. Walking down the main road, one can find multiple rental companies. Equipment, language, prices, payment options, etc. vary between each company. For an English speaking and credit card accepting company, then visit Japan, 〒990-2301 Yamagata, Zaoonsen, 川前934-24. It is a equipment rental company located within...

Discover a hidden gem of a ski resort that offers an extraordinary experience! This resort is a paradise for ski enthusiasts who appreciate pristine snow conditions, breathtaking scenic views, and unique local features. The ski tracks are beautifully maintained, nestled among majestic snow-covered trees, and the resort’s distinctive tree monsters add a whimsical charm to the landscape.

Unlike the busier and more commercialized ski destinations, this resort provides a tranquil escape, ensuring that the slopes are less crowded and the overall experience is more intimate. Its budget-friendly nature, compared to more popular resorts like Niseko, makes it an excellent choice for those seeking value without compromising on quality.

A useful tip for future visitors: remember to carry cash, as many of the cozy, on-site restaurants prefer it over card payments.

While the resort boasts an ample number of ski coaches, travelers should be aware that English communication may be limited. Despite this, the friendly and accommodating staff ensures a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Overall, if you’re in search of an authentic ski getaway where you can connect with the essence of winter sports in a serene and picturesque setting, this resort is an unbeatable choice. Don’t miss out on this less-trodden...

A Paradise of Snow Monsters and Winter Adventures If you’re traveling to Yamagata in winter, Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a must-visit destination. The resort offers a diverse range of courses for all levels from gentle slopes to tight tree runs Get into the Zao Rope Way Sanrokusen for Juhyo Kogen station where you can have some fun with the snow. From Juhyo Kogen Station get into the Zao Rope Way Sanchosen and you will reach to the top(around 1661m). In you way you can see the Snow Monsters JFYI: there might be strong winds at the top so make sure to be prepared with proper wears and shoes. For skiers/snowboarders: the resort is huge and it’s easy to get lost. So have a course map with you. For snowboards : there are lots of flat areas where you have to remove your snowboard and walk for the next lift. Access: Get a bus from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen. A one way ticket will cost around 1200Yen

Zao Monsters viewing: - very weather specific! - if raining or not cold enough or too windy the access to the summit where the zao monsters are at will be closed. - didn’t get to see it during my trip - the rope-way access to the summit took 50 mins to the first stop and 1.5 hours at the mid point to the summit. - the cables were frozen over and the ropeway was delayed. - the timing reflected on the signs weren’t accurate. - hard to see as we were catching a Shinkansen back to Tokyo. - the timing of the bus to Yamagata feels out of sync from the Shinkansen - this results in long waiting times in between and you having to leave zao 2 hours earlier than your shinkansen training timing. - planning certainly required and also a longer stay. - the resort town is otherwise quiet with nothing much else for non-skiers. - the slopes and power snow looks great for skiers/snowboarding!
