Equine Museum of Japan — Attraction in Yokohama

根岸台にある根岸競馬記念公苑内の博物館。ここ根岸台地域は、幕末より戦前迄由緒ある洋式競馬場として利用されていたが、第二次世界大戦中は日本海軍、敗戦後当地がGHQに接収されたことで、その後は米軍のゴルフ場として主に使用されていた。昭和44年にゴルフ場部分が接収解除されたことで、その跡地を横浜市が公園として整備し、残りの部分を日本中央競馬会が競馬記念公苑として管理することとなり、今に到っている。公苑内は、広くはないものの大変見晴らしが良く、一等馬見所も良く見え、また有料の当博物館の他、馬と触れ合うことが出来るポニーセンターがある。ポニーセンターでは、ポニーやサラブレッドの他在来馬の野間馬などを見ることができ、天皇賞の優勝馬が余生をおくっている。ちなみに天皇賞は、レース開催当初から皇族や政府高官が根岸競馬場の会員として名を連ね、明治天皇も賞品を寄贈されるなど何度かこの地を訪れたことに由来するが、そのため根岸競馬場がルーツだと言われている。尚公苑内は、ペットの入場は可能だが、馬を刺激するため飼い主...
