Interesting for its content as well as it's ommissions!
This is one of the most interesting museums of war I've ever been to. It is predominantly a museum of the Soviet Great Fatherland War (ie. WW2, 1941-45). Its ommissions are stark, however. There is no mention of why the WW2 for the USSR only began in 1941, or anything since 1945. It is a military history museum but without any comment on the Soviet Union post 1945 and all of the memorabilia, the museum projects the very image of the Soviet Union that is in the contemporary editions of Pravda that are exhibited in the museum. All of this is in itself very interesting and the English speaking museum curator/manager is fascinating to discuss the history with. A student of Soviet history myself, we had quite the good-natured debate about the historical 'facts' in question.
There is a smaller exhibit on Afghanistan, though Soviet WW2 is the main event. The original artefacts of war on display are very interesting and overall this museum is absolutely...
Read moreMuseum documenting Kazakhstan's contribution to various wars of the Sowjet Union, especially during the Great Patriotic War (a.k.a. WW2). There are many display pieces, especially rifles and ammo. But also other items, such as an Edelweiss badge made of ivory, and field surgery instruments. We also enjoyed the life-size reconstructions, for example of the Sowjet capture of the German Reichstag.
However, what really stood out in our visit was the very knowledgeable and personalized tour through the exhibits we enjoyed - even though we just showed up.
To recommend!

Read moreOut of all the museums I have seen in Kazakhstan, this one was my favourite not just because I like WW2 history but because it was in English .
Not only in English , but guided in English by a very nice and warm local kid. You can see he is passionate, but not oppressive of other ideas and questions . He was interested about where I was from and he seemed open to discuss various prospectives on the history he was telling .
The museum itself is not the best in the world but it goes into the specifics which I like . The real jewel is the guide and the old man who works there aswell, both of whom were very welcoming.
Not to mention its super cheap and situated in an area with plenty nice...
