When we hear about galleries or art museums we go back in time in Ashmolean museum which was the first ever and the oldest museum in the world 🌏and you can imagine the amount of history heritage that is diplayed in Ashmolean, i bet it goes back to B. C💭💭. There are other museums like the Louvre and the Smithsonian that came at the early centuries 💬at different parts of the world🌍. In Africa, Kenya🇰🇪 precisely had the absence of organised documents📒📖📚📔📘📝 and objects that would have had a place to be stored🏛 at the early centuries. The perspective of that era was bringing a different narrative based on the people 👦👧👨👩👲👳👮👷💂🕵.But today we can happily celebrate 👏part of our heritage thanks to Nairobi Gallery .The building itself is an iconic and distinctive building which is also referred as point zero In the C.B.D.. Which has a history of it's own. It was built in 1913 and started as a civil service building which by then was referred to as hatches 🐣👼,matches 💑👫 and dispatches 🏳🏳🖋.Then later in 1963 it became the first Nairobi Provincial Commissioner's👮 Office🏠 for the natives .Today this building serves as a museum and a national monument. Some of them call it the National Gallery, But to most it's called The Joseph Murumbi's gallery because 3/4 of the items and objects were collected by Joseph Murumbi during his exile in the UK and each time he got foreign minister's assignments and duties in different countries in the world. Everything he had collected brought meaning and understanding 😇during the slave era and colonialism in Africa. And when you visit this particular museum you get to learn more and be able to get a sense of community and places by celebrating and enjoying a collection heritage of our own.. For the history and art lovers this is a place to call home 😊and have the best experience of how we transitioned economically in terms of currencies .... Then our fashion.....the type of jewelry we wear.... Our interior deco ...(for example the objects he (joseph murumbi) had for his office and living room) ...also the books for how the maumau fought and last but not least the materials they used in war during their war era. As much as somethings will remain in the past some materials most precisely on fashion the kikoi's ,vitenge's and jewelry are still used on our day to day lives... It's just that we modify them to fit the fashion sense of today... But basically nothing much has really changed meaning we are still portraying part of the heritage and this place just relives it day by day....

Situated in perhaps what is widely regarded as Nairobi's first administrative headquarters, Nairobi Gallery features an ecclectic collection of Africana, most of which comprises of artefacts, artworks and memorabilia from the collection of Joseph Murumbi, Kenya's second Vice President. The collection is rich and features a diverse collection of African art and cultural displays from all reaches of the continent as far as Gabon and from Ethiopia as well as a host of other countries. Notably, it includes works featured by African Heritage as well as several other artists and organizations that were dedicated to the conservation of the arts and culture in the country. In addition, Nairobi Gallery also regularly features exhibitions of local and visiting artists as well as thematic exhibitions which usually run anywhere from two weeks up to three months at a time. The gallery is operated by the National Museums of Kenya and is one of the lesser-known cultural sites in Kenya; perhaps due to it's understated nature and location. The buildings housing the gallery are among the oldest in Nairobi dating back to 1909 and were the original administrative headquarters of the city. The building seems misplaced in the growing city shadowed by the towering skyscappers around it. This gallery is well-worth the visit, a must for those culturally-inclined.

Not necessarily tourist friendly entry or signage. Suppose it’s a challenge due to location between highway construction and immigration building. Once you do get in 1000ks tourist fee seems worth it, I guess? The building is beautiful and not highlighted enough nor appreciated, maintenance is lacking. A star off for that in hopes that maintenance is in the future. Once inside a quiet place with decent information and large collection. Begins with contemporary Kenya artists but quickly shifts to more traditional arts and crafts. Overall the place. Could use a good update, or rebrand and certainly cleaning. If into weaving and fabrics this is a good visit and covers quite a portion of Africa. There’s also a large collection dedicated to the founder of the collection, Joseph and Sheila Murumbi. Then there’s a wing with items for sale while another for amateur art. I guess I was expecting a deeper dive into national artists as opposed to art of Middle Africa, and the life and times of the founder of art collection.

The Nairobi Gallery is located at Kenyatta Avenue and Uhuru Highway roundabout next to Nyayo house. The building is situated at Kenya’s point zero from where distances to all corners of the country and subsequently to the continent and the world were measured from. Further, the building is part of an original master plan of government buildings around what is now Kenyatta Avenue. The building is in many ways connected to the history and development of Nairobi and its people. Built in 1913 to house the Native Ministry, this building was fondly referred to by the settler community as ‘Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’ because of the births, marriages and deaths that were recorded here. Before independence, the building was a colonial courthouse where natives accused of entering Nairobi without a pass were tried and sentenced. After independence, the house was used by the provincial commissioner as the Nairobi province office until 1983 when they relocated to Nyayo house. Later KANU (Kenya African National Union) the ruling party by then used the building as its KANU Nairobi branch office until 1999.

Because of its historical significance the Old P.C.’s building was gazetted by the Kenya government on 22/10/93 Gazette Notice 5257 and confirmed on 19/04/95 Gazette Notice 2016. The building was then handed over to the National Museums of Kenya for preservation purposes in 1977. It opened its doors to the public in November 2005 when it hosted its first temporary exhibition “Dreaming in Pictures” by JakKatarikawe.

Today the Gallery has become the home of Joseph and Sheila Murumbi’s collections. Joseph Murumbi was Kenya’s second vice president. Nairobi Gallery is also dedicated to promoting local artists through displaying of their artwork. The key attractions include:

Architectural Design: The Nairobi Gallery is an example of Victorian architecture, the exterior of the building is decorated with columns, niches, friezes and pediments of natural stone. The original entrance leads from the roundabout into an octagonal dome hall (point zero) covered with a beautiful dome. The surrounding rooms extend from the central space and are divided into two wings, the walls have a smooth line plaster finish, windows and doors of teak wood, some ceilings have patterns.

Point Zero: Original entrance of the building leads to point zero location from where all the distances to all corners of the country were measured from. (The black spot at the Centre is the point zero.)

Colonial Safes: The Nairobi Gallery has two old safes that were used by the colonial government and have never been opened since they left.

The Murumbi African Heritage Collections: Joseph and Sheila Murumbi were Africa’s greatest private collectors of artifacts, art pieces, books, jewelry, postal stamps, textiles and furniture which are today on display at the Nairobi Gallery. Their mission was to preserve, protect and promote African culture in all its form. The Murumbi African heritage collection exhibition at the Nairobi Gallery has been displayed in different galleries with different storylines; collection of books, textiles and costumes, jewellery, African artifacts, the Murumbi home and finally the pan African postage stamp collection said to be next to the queen of England in importance. (Pictured above: Joseph Murumbi. Below: Some of the collections in display)

Pioneer Art Gallery: The National Museums of Kenya endeavors to promote artists through the display of their artwork and an art space within this building has been dedicated to this cause. Temporary Art exhibitions by both pioneer and upcoming artists from within and out of Kenya are held after every three months in this space. Photos of some of the pioneer African artists who started their art career in 1960’s despite all the odds are also on display. Some of these artists are Magdalene Odondo, ExpenditoMwembeKibula, ElkanaOngesa, Jack Katarikawe, Richard Onyango, John Ondochameny, Francis Nnaggenda, Sanaa Gateja, Accent Soi, Geraldine Roberts, NaniCroze,...
