Nestled amidst the picturesque Ardennes forest, Vianden Castle transports visitors to a bygone era of unparalleled grandeur. Our recent visit to this magnificent fortress in Luxembourg was nothing short of a fairy tale experience, leaving us awestruck and enthralled.
Stepping foot into Vianden Castle felt like stepping back in time. The meticulously preserved architecture and intricate detailing flawlessly capture the spirit of medieval times. From the moment we entered, we were immediately drawn into the majestic atmosphere that pervaded the entire castle.
The guided tour provided by the knowledgeable and passionate staff was truly enlightening. We were captivated by the stories of knights, princes, and princesses that once graced these halls.
The castle's interior is a feast for the eyes. The lavish rooms, adorned with period furniture, tapestries, and ornate chandeliers, evoke a sense of regality. The panoramic views from the castle's turrets overlooking the charming countryside and the winding River Our are simply breathtaking.
One highlight of our visit was exploring the castle's expansive underground passages, which added an element of excitement and mystery to the experience. We couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of those responsible for constructing these hidden tunnels.
Outside the castle walls, the beautifully manicured gardens offered peaceful moments of reflection. We strolled through the elegant pathways, admiring the vibrant blooms and reveling in the tranquility. A true relic of the past.
In Luxembourg you can find the old town of Vianden. With many houses that are most likely dozens if not hundred of years old and brick roads, one place stands out the most: the castle of Vianden. The castle, which stands upon a roman camp ruins, is hundred of years old and took several centuries to fully build. In it, you can go on a self guided tour using. You can rent a multi-language speaker that explains about what is that you see in each station of the tour. It is recommended, and you can take 1 per family. You'll get to see the old ruins upon which the castle is built, through the life standard of the elite of the middle ages, through the work place of the common people serving as cooks and maids. You can also learn about the history of the family that resided in the castle and its connection to the royal family of the Netherlands.
In the castle itself there are extra attractions for the visitors that are not included in the entry price. For example: holding an eagle, watching trained owls and eagles (though it seems they live fine, do not worry about animal abuse much), taking a shot at a bow and arrow, and more. At the end of the tour lies a market. If you look for middle age themed items, O don't recommend getting it there. Also there's kiosk and a simple restaurant. I haven't tried both, they are quite pricy.
There are also attractions that are free, like nice acts (with so speaking, just acting, so anyone can understand) and some live music and flag show.
Keep in mind:
You are in nature, take some relief cream in case you get stung by something (as I did)
Parking is limited by 5 hours, which is more than enough.
There are steps, some are narrow. Watch your step. All in all, there's not a lot of walking.
If you're looking to drive someplace else after, that is far, you should try to find a meal in Vianden. The surrounding areas are small rural villages with no restaurants. Vianden is also very small and narrow, so finding parking can be...
Read moreWow, what a blast from the past! Our last visit here was way back in 2014, and it's crazy how my oldest son still remembers every detail from when he was just 3,5 years old. This castle is like the VIP spot for tourists in Luxembourg, and it's easy to see why.
The ticket prices won't break the bank either: €10 for adults, €2.5 for kids, and €5 for students with a valid student card.
They've got these handy information devices at the counter, and you can choose your language preference, so you won't miss a beat. We opted for the Scan Me app, scanning barcodes at each site for all the juicy details. Saved me from trying to recall everything back at the hotel. You know how it is with kids at museums, patience is definitely not their strong suit 😂.
Walking through history here is a real treat, especially witnessing the castle's evolution over the centuries, from the 11th to the 14th. No wonder it's earned its spot as one of CNN's 21 most beautiful castles in the world.
But let's talk about the real MVP: the cafeteria. Don't leave without trying their signature soup, Bouneschlupp. It's a hearty green bean soup with potatoes and onions (they even do a mean vegetarian version).
Don't miss out on the souvenir area either, because what's a trip without some cheesy memorabilia, am I right?
Pro tip: Take some time to wander the charming village of Vianden surrounding the castle, those picturesque houses are...
