Bukit Mertajam Tua Pek Kong Cheng Hawker Centre is a major hawker centre in Bukit Mertajam. It is located on Jalan Pasar, right in front of Bukit Mertajam Tua Pek Kong Temple. This place is absolutely crowded in the morning, when the market is in full swing. There are plenty of things to eat here, including the wan than mee, koay chiap, Hokkien mee, lor mee, and other local hawker items. Most of these stalls are the second or third generation of the initial owner, meaning to say that these delicious receipt has been there for more than a decade, it's typically a local street food you won't want to miss, some of those you can't find anywhere else.The newly renovated food court was situated just beside the Tua Pek Kong temple. It had a good mix of modern and old interior, and it managed to capture the retro chinese vibes they were looking for.
Located in the middle of Seberang Perai, Bukit Mertajam is a former agrarian village with quite a flavourful start. In the old days, the bustling town was known for its pepper, clove, cinnamon, and sugar plantations. I ordered less noodles and add bean sprouts n was expecting to add RM 2 since the small bowl is RM6 and big one is RM8. One of the girl charged me $16.50 for a bowl for adding ingredients?! I was in shock n she kept on saying if you add ingredients is RM16.50. Behind customer pointed the chart at the stall, ooo okay…I take it as miscommunication. I assumed that she thought I would like to add all the ingredients that written on the chart so I explained to her that I only want more bean sprouts. So I paid her RM8 for my noodles. When she served the noodles to my table, I was not there and she collected RM10 from my hubby. Luckily my husband check with me if I have paid as he knows is my routine to pay first. When I return to her and asked…she pass me RM10 before I could finish my sentence. So please watch out for dishonesty staffs working for the stall. Be careful. The shophouses are understood to be opened in April and existing and new hawkers and stalls and shops moving in selling various food and sundry items. The old town of BM is slowly but surely undetgoing a rejuvenation to bring back life and a hive of activities both social, cultural and commetcial activities. The temple itself has a ling history.
