蓋飯 Cup Rice (Small) = RM8.00 No Service Charge Important Note: This Food Stall cannot be found on Grab's Map. I would recommend to choose "Pasar Bukit Mertajam" instead as your Destination. Once you've arrived, navigate using Google Map's Location. Its a Very Short Walk. (Please refer to the Screenshot I've attached) According to a Friendly Grab Driver, 蓋飯 or Cup Rice is apparently a Speciality of Bukit Mertajam. I have never heard of this before so I was intrigued. Just nice, got to know of this place thru a Random Facebook Reel Video. So of course I had to give this a try. The Food Stall is actually a Very Small Hole in the Wall type of Shop. Its owned by an Elderly Uncle with what looks like 2 Thai Ladies assisting him. Not a Big Place, it has at most 2 Tables for Dining In. Most Customers I see order this as Dapao Takeaway. BM Cup Rice (Small) = RM8.00 The Basic Core of this Dish is actually Roasted Chicken Rice 烧鸡饭. But the way they serve this is Very Uniquely Interesting that I've never seen done before. So what they do is they first put a Big Generous Metal Cup of Standard White Rice on a Plate. They will then shred up what looks like 1 Roasted Chicken Drummy and pile all the Shredded Chicken Pieces on top of the White Rice. The Dish is then finished off by Lumming the Whole Thing with a Thick Generous Layer of Lor Zhup. The Metal Bowl that was used to hold the Rice is then re-used to hold a Chicken Soup. It was adorable to see them re-use this because you could still see Little Bits of Rice still clinging onto it within the Soup. So Rustic Looking! How does the Actual Dish taste like? The Soup is tastes Very Light, Not Chickeny at all and interestingly I thought also had a Very Mild Taste of Tea Leaves. Totally not how I expect a Soup for a Roast Chicken Rice Stall to taste like. There is Nothing Special about the White Rice. Standard Look, Standard Smell, Standard Taste. Not Overly Dry, Not Overly Niam Niam, Very Standard. The Chicken Pieces are Noticeably Salty. They are Tender and Very Delicious to eat. Within the Chicken Pieces, there are also Very Small Pieces of what looks like Minced Garlic which adds to the Savouriness. The way they're piled on the Rice like this for some reason looked to me like a "Mini Roast Chicken Rice Ice Kacang" Hahaha! The Soul of this Dish though I feel is that Lor Zhup. It is Well Thickened with Cornstarch, Noticeably Salty and Savoury. The Perfect Type of Dark Savoury Niam Niam Sort of Zhup to 下饭 with. Like I said, this is like a "Deconstructed Version" of Roasted Chicken Rice. Imagine eating Roast Chicken Rice 烧鸡饭 with a Heaping Amount of Shredded Chicken Meat and a Generous and Copious Amount of Lor Zhup all over like Curry Png. Taste so Good OMG! If you enjoy eating Rice with Plenty of Zhup, you will especially enjoy this. Conclusion and Closing Thoughts At RM8.00 (S$2.50), this is Definitely Worth the Money to give it a Try. I keep calling it a "Roasted Chicken Rice" in this Review but it actually taste alot nicer than that. Because I personally enjoy having Plenty of Zhup lum all over Rice, this was Particularly Shiok to eat for me. Eating the Rice flavoured by that Beautiful Gravy with Bits of Salty Savoury Chicken Pieces shooting through was Delicious! It was a Really Generous Portion too for the Price, and Very Filling. Simple, Affordable, Filling, Unpretentious and Rustic. This was a Damn Shiok Version of Roast Chicken Rice that I definitely can recommend to try! Thanks for Reading. A Taste of Nostalgia – BM 盖饭 for the 1950s to 1980s Generation For those who grew up in Bukit Mertajam from the 1950s to 1980s, this BM 盖饭 is a true taste of childhood. It’s one of the last places in Malaysia still serving this old-school style chicken rice, packed with memories for those who appreciate the simple, comforting flavors of the past. If you’re taking away, I highly recommend ask the seller mixing the rice with the sauce while it’s still hot and don't separate the sauce– this lets the rice fully absorb the rich, savory flavor. For an extra kick, add some chili and a touch of soy sauce for that perfect balance. The environment can be quite hot, so takeaway is often the better option for those who prefer a cooler dining experience. It’s not just a meal – it’s a connection to the past, a humble yet heartwarming taste of old Bukit Mertajam.. it is very sad to see BM town one street already fully lost the Malaysian sense. So, Now, as a parent, I pass this humble yet heartwarming tradition to my offspring, hoping they too will one day appreciate the simple joy of a meal that carries the stories of our past. Don’t let this ancient chicken rice disappear. Let’s protect our Malaysian food culture and keep these flavors alive for future generations. This is what called as KOCABI. KOCABI need not only seller maintain it but also the customer strongly support it

Feels like eating home cook food, very satisfying. A humble food that is delicious, filling, and not at the cost of your health. i read the review and notice some mention "soup no taste/not enough salt", or "sauce no taste", which i chuckled a little bit (no offence). people that complain should realize that the low sodium is for the sake of your health, and so that you can munch down large amount of that delicious sauce, which mix with rice and those yummy bits of roasted meat. some even complain that "rice not hot enough", which again, i don't think that is valid complain. the rice should not be too hot since this type of meal is meant to finish quickly, plus the soup is definitely hot enough to go down with rice, if you wish to. both sauce and soup taste really elegant and balance, tasty if you ask me. unlike other outside food which usually they do not care bout your health, and just simply put in large amount of salt and MSG to make people think it is "delicious". i choose the cheapest one, but even that the portion is very satisfying, even for a big eater like me . And even this cheapest set, the meat , rice, sauce and soup, all are perfectly balance together in terms of portion and taste, really really masterfully done. will definitely return for more if i pass by here again.
