San Anton is a small park located away from most of the island's tourist attractions and so rarely visited by tour groups. Right in front of this secluded place, one finds the classic Corinthia Palace Hotel, a 5-star luxury place of accomodation. Location apart, San Anton's public area is less than 1 square kilometre in size but this small space of lush greenery is a wonderful place that makes roaming around in silence a pleasure. Old trees labelled with common names, technical or botanical names and country of origin inhabit the soil patches while a series of elevated paved passageways are ideal for easy walking. Most of the trees are not local but imported varieties, mostly from Australia, New Zealand, Africa and South America. There is however a section with local indigenous plantations, some rare while others on the verge of extinction. Another section comprises a thriving orange grove which is a beauty to look at, particularly when dotted with fruit. Summer is not the ideal time to visit but winter and spring turn this garden into a paradise of flowering plants and lovely bushes that fill in the spaces between trees. Come here in winter, bring packed food and drinks (there's nowhere to buy once you're inside), sit on one of the many wooden benches available and enjoy the atmosphere. Peacocks and ducks running around freely will approach you to ask for any leftovers you may have.

Buses 51, 52, 53, 54 and 56 from the capital (destination Rabat) pass a few metres away...

Probably the best known of the Islands’ gardens, San Anton Gardens was laid out by Grand Master Antoine de Paule as grounds to his summer residence, San Anton Palace.

From 1802 until 1964, San Anton Palace was the official residence of the British Governor, after which it remained a state building and is now the residence of the Maltese President. Various heads of state have visited the gardens over the years and numerous plaques mark their ceremonial tree planting. The garden is a botanical delight with mature trees, old stone urns, fountains, ponds and formal flower beds. The garden is formal with rustic touches and holds a wide variety of plants and flowers, such as Jacaranda trees, Norfolk Pines, Bougainvillea and roses.

Nowadays, the garden is the Annual Horticultural Show venue and during summer, the spacious central court becomes an open-air theatre for drama and musical...

The President Gardens. We walked around the gardens a day after a storm hit the area (100mph) winds did a lot of damage to trees and plants. I must praise the staff for the work they put in to clear the area. It was so sad to see some of the trees some of are from round the world and can’t be replaced. There lots to see in the gardens like ducks, swans, birds, pickpockets, fish, waterfalls, There’s toilets and benches for you and it’s wheelchair friendly and free to enter, but please be aware parking is out side in the streets, local buses do stop a short walk away if you use the open top bus they go pass as well, you can op on & off about 100 yards away and are the best way to get there from the main towns.

Really gorgeous gardens and a lovely place to spend some time. It’s free to enter the outdoor areas, and there’s a calm, peaceful vibe throughout. The flower displays are amazing, and we even saw peacocks wandering around which was a nice surprise. There are lots of info boards around and labels on trees and plants, so it’s actually quite interesting if you like learning about nature. The gardens also have a bit of historical significance, which adds to the experience. Some parts of the paths are a bit uneven, so not everywhere is fully accessible, but overall it’s well looked after and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
