A peaceful retreat from the sometimes overwhelming hustle and bustle of Puerto Nuevo. The popotillo (straw) art was the main attraction for us, but they have a nice variety of other styles.
When we stopped in, they were still settling in at a new, larger, 2-story location (Anzuelo No.4, 22710 Puerto Nuevo, B.C., Mexico) down the street from their original spot. The new location has a balcony with tables and chairs overlooking the popular Paseo del Mar (the street with all the beach front restaurants). Ultimately, they will have a coffee bar and offer a selection of local wines.
Although they were still a few days away from being fully up and running when we were there, the owner/artist (Oscar Octavio Morales) got creative with some delightful coffee beverages, which we enjoyed at a table on the balcony, while watching the throngs of visitors exploring the restaurants and trinket shops down below.
We actually were in Puerto Nuevo specifically to see a new popotillo piece Oscar had recently completed. We ended up buying the piece, which was yet to be framed. The space where we planned to hang the piece and the size of the piece dictated the inside and outside dimensions of the frame and we wanted a particular finish on the frame as well. Oscar took all that in stride and had our custom framed popotillo art piece ready for us to take home at the end of our two-day mini-vacation.

Read moreIf you visit Tijuana and can drive extra distance passing Rosarito you'll enjoy this. Just walking around Puerto Nuevo, after having lunch in a local place we found this Gallery that said "dry straw art" Never heard about something like that and made me curious, taking a closer look, it was a very interesting concept and the guy at the door invited us to come inside, there were 2 more artists busy on their tables and then he showed us the piece that he was working on, the technique and we could touch it, how they get the patterns and the possibility to make a custom piece if requested. Very, very interesting. On the other side of the gallery there were some paintings from local artists of great talent and then we had a presentation of a prepared coffee burning with liquor, cinnamon and chocolate wich make it aquire that unique flavor. Definitely a must do stop if you are...
Read moreI've been to Puerto Nuevo for the lobster deals for a very long time and never even seen this place until this past weekend! We were just walking around after our meals and before heading back to the city and decided to walk into this gallery just to kill some time. We found a truly gem in the rough. Beautiful pieces including a type of art that I've personally never seen before (they take some tiny pieces of straws to make wonderful vibrant pieces). We got to meet one of the artist who described the whole process with such passion. Everyone was super nice and let us walk around without been pushy or trying to sell us anything. At the end we ended up walking away with a beautiful small piece the artist had just finished, he even framed it for us right in front of us. We are sure to be back because we fell in love with the gold leaf painting of "Portrait of Adele...
