We bought lots of souvenirs and gifts here. The prices were quite reasonable and you could also haggle if you buy several things and ask nicely. The people there were very sweet and willing to help. One lady at one of the places there asked what we were looking for in fluent English. Maybe we looked lost. We told her we were looking for hand made souvenirs and she kindly explained where to go. Cash is definitely the king here. Some vendors do accept credit cards but they often charge you a fee and you wouldn't be in a good position to haggle at that point. The market could look a bit intimidating to North Americans but once you are in there you will quickly realize that this is a place where a bunch of hard working people are trying to make an honest living. Be polite and use common sense to be aware of your surroundings, and you will have lots of fun shopping and eating.

We went here from seeing countless YouTube videos and from hearing that this was the biggest mercado in GDL. Well, bigger doesn't always mean better. Mercado San Juan de Dios has really gone downhill due to tourism, and lack of maintaining the market as a whole. Nothing but majority of knock off items, lots of Mexican items(boots, sandals, western wear, and cheesy souvenirs) Pushy salesman types don't allow you to browse comfortably. Food wise? Let me put it to you this way-our uber driver said "you're gonna have to have a strong stomach and liver for this food" big red flag! The only thing I bought is a fresh Guanabana(Soursop) for 54 pesos, about $3 USD because it was ripe, and second of all, you hardly can find this cancer fighting superfood back in the states and when you do, you're paying a super inflated price. Big pharma, FDA, and our government want to keep us sick, remember??? Anyway, my suggestion to you if you want to visit a local Mercado is scratch this one off your list and go to MERCADO DE SANTA TERE. You're welcome!

This market has a courtyard with dozens of cages of colorful birds. A preacher yelled about sin and repentance, but I think he was thinking more of sex and booze and not about caging birds. On the other side heavy metal music played to balance out the preaching. The market has a wide range of every day household products for the kitchen along with fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. There are also higher end items like leather shoes and bags. I purchased a stylish black leather messenger bag for a reasonable price. The highlight was the Torta. There are many vendors. Walk around, see the style you like most, sit down, and a sandwich will appear. No need to order one just let them know if you want it for there or to.go. I recommend you eat it there and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the place.

Fantastic market with a massive selection. Eat at “Super Antojitos- La Casa del Autentico Torito” the second counter restaurant when you come down the stairs from the walking bridge. It has al pastor on a spit and the BEST tacos I’ve had in Guadalajara. Fresh toppings, delicious meat and amazing tortillas. Do not eat at Sabor a Mexico (the first restaurant down the stairs). We ordered the Carne de Puerco en Chile (lower left dish on the flyer) and got a dish with mostly bones and hardly ANY meat. We’ve eaten at other places in the market and had delicious food. This place isn’t what you’re looking for! at the next stall… Definitely get some of the unusual fruits you find. We LOVED the small red seed pods (lower left of my photo). The reddish yellow fruits in the right are also delicious.

If you’re looking for a specific item, this is the place to go. You can find everything from luggage to electronics to clothing of all shapes and sizes. This Mercado is absolutely ginormous. You could spend weeks walking up and down the aisles and still never see everything. It’s a great place to go and experience some of the culture of Guadalajara. Plus, it’s free! That is, of course, until you start doing some shopping. One word of warning - it can be pretty taxing/overwhelming after a while due to the sheer volume of vendors hoping to get a slice of your attention. If you’re interested in a video tour of San Juan de Dios Mercado, we posted one on our YouTube channel.

One of the largest indoor markets in the Americas. Disorganized as only a Mexican market can be, Mercado Libertad offers a wide selection of EVERYTHING, except booze. From shoes to saddles, clothing, pets, kitchenwares... you get the idea. If you're in Guadalajara this market is definitely worth a visit. And if you're planning on exploring it properly, you'll need most of an afternoon. Pro-Tip: I've heard of a lot of people getting lost in this place. If your sense of direction isn't that great, start at the corner of the massive jewelry store nextdoor, and set a GPS marker on your phone before you go in.
