I lived in Barra de Navidad for 12 years and ran an eco tour company out of there. I went back to visit in January 2019 and stayed across the Lagoon at the Grand Bay Hotel.
Barra de Navidad is a great little Beach town with affordable accommodation nice restaurants and friendly people.
But Barra de Navidad has never been about the beach. Barra does not now nor has it ever had a great beach. The lagoon beach isn't a place that I, having live there, would spend any time at as I have doubts about the water quality in the lagoon.
The bay beach has a very strong shore break so it is not great for swimming as it can be difficult to get back to shore if the waves come up.
The beach itself has been eaten away and destroyed several times by passing storms. When I lived there on the beach a storm came by and ate the beach away so that it was 18ft lower by morning than it had been the previous evening. My patio actually fell into the ocean.
The government has tried to shore up this beach several times by bringing in rocks, retaining wall and some sort of foam stuff the debris of which are still laying about.
