Here is the real skinny on these guys! “Absolutely the best” I googled “best Pacific Sailfish Fishing in Mexico, The answer was Puerto Escondido, so, here I am. I booked Rey because the photos on his website seemed to be mostly of catching Sailfish and that was my whole purpose for going to Puerto Escondido.
Got to the beach at 6:00 AM ready to go and waited about an hour for my 6:30 AM start. A smaller, different, single engine boat with a different skipper showed up and said let’s go! I’m thinking WTF but being anxious to get out on the water so off I go!
Turns out that Captain Rey was I’ll that morning and his larger, newer, twin engine boat had been damaged by another boat at the harbour and needed to be repaired. Apparently, not to disappoint me, at a last minute alternative, Rey enlisted his father, a forty year + veteran Fishing guide to get me out on the water.
Well, honestly, I must put all the other stuff that I probably could complain about aside and be honest about how good this 8 Hr fishing trip was.

Rey let me catch my own bait and to me being involved is always appreciated. It took some time to get out to Rey’s fishing grounds but in no time at all we had our first Pez Vela. A hefty fish that probably weighed close to 100lbs. For the next two hours there was plenty of action but nothing stayed on. And then we got into our second. A smaller fish at about 65 lbs I think.
The ocean was calm and it usually is, Rey was great at minding the lines and changing baits if things slowed down. I appreciated his help learning and practicing Spanish, and he was a very patient teacher.
Without hesitation I would go...
Read moreDue to a scheduling mixup, Rey agreed to take our group of 4 at the last minute last Monday. No matter, he was ready for us with all the supplies we needed and took us out for a very enjoyable experience. We saw whales and then spent about 3 hours catching dorado (mahi mahi). Overall we caught 7 good sized fish between us, letting all but one go. We saved the one to give to Rey for his family. Overall, we couldn’t have been more pleased. He knows where to go and how to catch. ...
