The second you get to this hotel it’s severely underwhelming. I truly don’t know how they get away calling themselves a 5 star resort. Despite that, I will write an honest review with pros and cons we have noticed during our current stay. Here are the highlights: I’ll start with the cons first just because I know reviews are helpful when you know what to consider. Cons: -The resort isn’t visually pretty on the outside or the inside. It’s decent but definitely not 5 star. (First pic: grey building is the front of the hotel) -Claims to be fully renovated but it doesn’t seem that way. It’s like they put lipstick on a pig. (View pics) -EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE BEDS. So this is our fault because we’re used to staying at hotels that say the room will be double beds, but offer you a king if they have it. We selected the king bed request, thinking we’d get a king but really they just push your double beds together. You can 100% feel the crack and so you and your partner basically have to sleep on your own beds. If that’s for you great, but if not, keep that in mind. We like to cuddle, so it was a big con. I was just told it was mentioned on the website and that it’s standard across all RIU hotels. (Pic with RIU red card shows the crack in the bed how it’s very uneven to where you can feel it.) -Small pools and there’s only 2. Also extremely tiny kids pool area. Like soooo tiny, maybe 5 kids can fit comfortably playing and there’s no space for parents to stay comfortably. -Only 2 restaurants that are actually restaurant type where you sit down and they bring your food. The other restaurants are Buffett. Which repeat food within Buffett restaurants, so they’re basically like one. -The walk to the beach isn’t the longest but isn’t short either. Walking 7-10 minutes when you’re tired from the beach day with your wet towels gets really annoying. Especially if you have kids in your party. The golf cart that transports people can only take 6 people at a time so if you want to take it you will have to wait longer. It also doesn’t run from 1pm to 3pm and stops service at 6pm. -There’s not much to do at the hotel itself, we find ourselves spending all of the time at the other RIU resort by the beach, because of the beach and their pool area is much nicer and fun. -Most resorts have like coffee shops, ice cream shops, or little places you can check out, this hotel has none of that. -No overall resort feel, this one feels like a basic hotel. Nothing really flashy or glamorous, just plain white buildings for the rooms and trees everywhere. -The room itself looks outdated even though it’s been “renovated”. (Pic is showing visual crack likes in the sink, and holes in the walls.) We wouldn’t have cared so much about it if we didn’t expect a 5 star hotel. Our expectations just weren’t met. -Very unforgiving to cancel or refund. Our flight got canceled on the Friday we were supposed to arrive and we wrote in immediately with our third party booker. They reached out to the hotel immediately to ask for either a refund for the unused day (Friday) or to let us extend one extra day. Both requests were denied, which we were taken back by, but just tried not to let it ruin our vacation. We just paid for a day we didn’t use, maybe the hotel really needs the money versus doing the right thing for first time customer. Ok let’s list some pros! Because there are some good things about the hotel. Pros: -Overall the hotel staff is friendly. They stick to their policies and just do their job, so I don’t think any of the cons are their fault. Just the hotel itself, maybe even RIU itself but I can’t say that since this is my first and last time staying at a RIU. -The food and drinks are good! The Buffett has an array of delicious options, truly something for everyone. It can get repetitive though. -The access to the other hotel at the beach is everything! The beach is sooo beautiful and the sitting area is nice. Over all, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone.

Restaurants: general buffet is very good for a buffet. Weird that you cant eat outside during lunch. Chairs don't move very well, so they often fall over. Restaurant is very noisy- the acoustics make it so you can hear every fork drop. All the toppings are in line before the meal they are meant to cover, so it creates a backlog in the line. Staff was generally very helpful and attentive. Fresh taco station and dessert were the highlights. Steak restaurant was disappointing. Steak was good but the sides were old and heated up. Italian restaurant was great, by far the best option. Excellent salad bar and fresh food. Asian was also quite tasty, but a still a buffet. Grill at the pool and beach club lunch were also good. Cocktail selection is varied and the bartenders are fabulous. There was a limited selection of beer and wine. Whole coffee pot at breakfast was very appreciated. It's also the best coffee they have; the machine coffee is terrible, coffee at the bar is decent. Rooms: the walls of the room were paper thin. It was one of the noisiest hotels we have ever stayed at. Rooms were big and clean with large comfy beds, but we could never sleep past 7:00 without great effort. We even had a corner room, so only one direct neighbor, but the noise was ridiculous. I will gladly come back but only if they install soft close on the doors. The noise from doors slamming and the cleaners woke us up every day at 7am. Workers walking around with extremely loud leaf blowers early in the morning are very frustrating too. They could designate a few buildings as silent buildings for those guests looking for rest and relaxation instead of a party. Staff : all of the staff was super friendly and helpful, saying hola every time they saw you. Everyone works really hard from the wait staff to the chefs to the cleaners. We also enjoyed the engagement and humor of the entertainment team. The foam party was really fun. The show performers were really great, especially the circus show. We liked the night parties including the silent disco and Friday night parties, but we can imagine some people find them overwhelming. Guest passes: we paid 800 pesos per person for 2 friends from another hotel to join us at our hotel for the day but they couldn't eat or drink at the beach bar or at the specialty restaurants. They are weirdly strict and paranoid about day pass users. You're really quite an alien if you walk around without that damn red bracelet. Hotel: Beautiful, well maintained grounds, plenty of chairs at the pool, less so at the beach. People smoking outside of smoking areas but no staff discouraged this. Coati and wombats all over the place, we thought they are cute, they are not aggressive and add something to the place. They will bite your fingers if lured so be careful. Pools: Kid area (riuland) good for kids. Swim up bar is a nice feature but this party pool usually had music that was way, way too loud. There is always staff walking around the pools cleaning up, again, less so at the beach. Overall, we liked almost everything at Riu Tequila. But two weeks of low quality of sleep really puts a big downer on a vacation.

If you have children or a baby DO NOT come here. I have been here 2 days and it’s already been a terrible experience. We arrived and were shocked to find we have been given an upper floor room with no elevator. Reservations knew we had a 4 month old and 3 year old. How they thought this was a good idea I have no idea. I have been struggling for the last 2 days to carry the pram up and down the stairs. I am exhausted. I raised this on arrival with the management and got told they couldn’t give me another room day after arrival, they said we had to wait until day 3. I am exhausted and I wouldn’t wish this upon any human being. We are left with no other choice except exhaustion. Further to this we called on the day after arrival to state we need a kettle. We were rudely refused and told its not thier problem. We need to sterilise bottles, do they not understand that a babies health is at risk. They didn’t care. Only Tui helped us with this and a rep gave us his. On this same call we mentioned we need more bottled water. We had used 2.5 bottles already in one evening, we asked for 10 and were refused by Belen. She told us she couldn’t guarantee us anything and were asking for too much. We don’t even drink alcohol! They couldn’t give us 10 bottles of water at an all inclusive. No care or attention at all for a family with a baby. Me and my wife suffered with bad stomachs during the whole trip. One one day I had explosive vomiting which I have never experienced. This took 3 days out of the so called holiday experience. No hand sanitisers are provided in any of the restaurants, clearly there will be no hygiene with people holding the same cutlery to serve food. Very shockingly we found a machete left next to the public walk way which i have attached a picture of. Very dangerous for young kids and adults and also the local wildlife. Also we had a serious issue with mould on the roof of our room entrance. This is unacceptable large mould patches which havent been dealt with. My daughter was coughing when we entered this room. This did not feel like this has been a holiday. Exhausted and stressed. Never been treated this way in any other hotel with staff who just don’t care at all. All staff on the reception and the tall large dude on the same shift are just miserable and unhappy. In the end after complaining non stop we were offered 2x30 min massages which in all honesty we didn’t want. It in no way made up for the experience we had. Whats more concerning is that i have made a complaint to RIU who did not even bother to try and contact the hotel to make things right. They just said for me to speak to TUI. Any decent company would actively try to fix things on site, and make things right. The words of the RIU complaints team was 'sorry we cant do anything for your current trip'. This is 5 days into a 14 day trip. All in all a very poorly run hotel with management that just prances around all day and doesnt care at all.

I stayed here at this all inclusive resort for a birthday getaway this August. It was a fantastic experience overall. Great staff, good food, and plenty of drink options between the various bars. Though I didn’t make it to the nightly entertainment daily, the shiws that I saw were pretty good and culturally engaging. The staff were really a highlight of the visit and even decorated my room once they learned it would be my birthday while there. The upgraded room also it was really nice and I really enjoyed the amenities there. This is only my second time staying at a resort and though I knew there wasn’t room service at this one (at least based off of what was listed on the website), they did have an option for 24 hour food available at the sports bar. With regards to food, we tried all the restaurants that were open for dinner at some point and dined for breakfast and lunch in the main buffet restaurant daily. There was enough variety and consistency your favorites to not get boring over our five days stay. in terms of the different restaurants, in order of enjoyment of experience it was the Italian restaurant, then the steakhouse, then the Asian cuisine. Note that the restaurants no longer take reservations in advance so you simply go beforehand to try and secure a seat. We didn’t do any excursions from the hotel so I can’t speak to that experience but getting into town of Playa del Carmen for a mini day trip was a breeze with the taxi station right outside the hotel lobby. The cleaning in the room every day was really great and though I noticed a couple smudges in the bathroom that didn’t seem to disappear, the overall cleaning and turn down service were really nice with a new featured animal design made via towels every day, haha. The variety of activities offered throughout the day, both at the pool and via the fitness spacss were fun with some of my favorite moments coming from the water sports and games. The swim up bar also was a nice place to hang and get to know other people at the resort over a variety of cocktails. Lastly, the ocean is just a short walk or shuttle ride away. And as many others have probably mentioned depending on when you go there will probably be a decent amount of seaweed right of the shoreline that you have to step through or over to get into the water. I definitely would recommend this resort to others and would visit in the future if I was looking to stay in the region again.

Had high expectations for this place with its good reviews and it being a 5-star resort. First day we got here the service was great and the staff was nice. When we got our room was when the issues start coming. Room Issues: - We got an older room where the place was not as clean as expected. - Shower head had a whole clump of black mold. They cleaned it but still unsettling. - The bed sheets were dirty with a brown footprint as well as a couple brown specks on the pillow. (Requested new sheets but they remade the bed in the same ones) - Ceiling in the bathroom was leaking water. They came to fix it but cleaned the dirty filter in the shower and stepped all over it with dirty boots. They didn't clean the floor or shower after so it was filthy. The restaurants in the resort were also not good at all. The Italian place and the Asian place was inedible. The steakhouse was the one redeeming thing about this place. The steak is juicy and they cook it right half of the time. The buffet has to be the best restaurant and that says something about the food. Selection in the buffet was good and it was tasty. Unlimited drinks were good and the bars were plenty. There is also no room service available. When the restaurants are closed and the buffet is closed you are resorted to the sports bar which has premade burgers and sandwiches where you can microwave. The beach was beautiful and the water is blue. The temperature was perfect and it was the best part of the trip. It is not on the hotel property as it is across the street on the Riu Yucatan side. There is a golf cart that comes every 10 minutes or it's about a 10 minute walk. The pools were warm and the bar pool was quite murky from the spilled drinks. Overall this wasn't what I expected at all. Being a 5 star resort I am not expecting luxury and everything to be perfect but my experience was sub-par at best. It is a great place to party with its club but don't expect more. I would not come back after this time. I think if the room did not have so many issues and they provided a newer room, I would have had a better time. A good budget resort to stay at but do not expect many luxury options.

We spent family vacation with kids at Riu Tequila. Can't express how happy we were with our stay. The grounds and room were extremely clean. Our room was meticulously cleaned every day. Room had a mini bar and mini fridge full of water, beer, pop. Staff at the resort work super hard to make you feel welcome and satisfied. Everyone is super nice and helpful. Variety of food and its delicious. Freshly baked pizza and fries, variety of pasta, meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables, burgers, hot dogs, huge selection of dessert, freshly baked bread, ice cream, seafood, you name it and they had it all. They even have small section with gluten-free bread, cookies, pastries. However they didn't have toaster specific for gluten-free products. Dishes had an allergens warning signs. Keep in mind that this resort isn't beach front. However, they have a beach club for Riu Tequila, walking 7 minutes to the beach in a shade tunnel, or you can take a shuttle to the beach. Keep in mind that you have an access to Riu Yucatan, Riu Playacar which are just across the street and are the beach front resorts. However you need to get a towel from Riu tequila resort and walk with the towel to their beach club... We found it very inconvenient to walk back and forth with four towels... Resort is clean, safe, quiet and roomy with abundance of palm trees, other trees, bushes, animals ( raccoons, monkeys, capibaras, which entertained our kids) Riu Tequila has kids club in an area with lots of shade. You can leave your child there or you can stay there with them. Lots of shade by one side of the pool. Beach is huge and clean. Entertainment team work super hard for you to have fun. Every night they have an amazing night show or party. Aqua gym every morning will keep you in a great shape. Well done Riu Tequila. Would highly recommend and definitely will be back.
