I had to write about our experience at the Riu Tequila in Playa Del Carmen. We had the absolute worst stay we ever had at any resort. I chose Riu hotels due to the amazing experience I had in Jamaica and the reviews I read about Riu Tequila. We had 2 rooms in our party: a suite and double bed. We were told our rooms would be ready at 3pm upon arrival at noon and the suite was not ready until almost 4pm, making it hard for us to surprise our friend for her birthday in a timely manner. The staff in Rosa Roja and Black Cow restaurants were extremely rude. We saved seats for our friends as they were coming down from their suite and was questioning several times on when our party was arriving being told that we couldn't hold seats while other people who also held tables were not questioned. Mind you there is no signage posted that your whole party had to be present to be seated. The bartenders Azela, Emmanuel and others who worked Saturday morning/afternoon at the swim up bar were extremely Racist and rude to us. I took a video of the staff and posted it to my tik tok. They told my friend that her drinks were cut off and literally would not serve any of us any drinks including water, ice, nor give us paper towels. They completely ignored us, mocked us and had conversations about us in Spanish. We are not dumb and we know mannerisms and know when someone is looking at us and laughing. We were not belligerent, rude nor drunk, nor any louder than the other races in the pool area and they would only speak to one of the white ladies we meet named Hailey (also included in the video). We went to the Rui Yutucan hotel near the beach and the bartender Leo was extremely nice, he poured shots for us without us having to ask and even changed the station for us. We were loud and singing over there and was never treated badly. Your Riu Tequila staff is the rudest most racist staff I have ever encountered. On top of the rude treatment we received, The rodents on the resort were overwhelming to the point that two of them started fighting in front of us and we couldn't even walk the path. The rodents are overwhelming and nasty. In addition to the rude staff, we were told we had hotel transfers from "Destination Services" which took forever to accommodate us going to the hotel and they were rude to my friends until I came along and had a conversation with the Concierge. Upon departure I called Sunday to confirm and emailed and was told to meet in the lobby at 4:50 a.m. in order to make it to the airport 3 hours before our 9:00 a.m. departure flight. Around 5:15 a.m. on Monday April 29th I contacted destination service to ask them where the transportation driver was. I was told that the driver was not answering the phone and he did not pick up any other passengers from Riu resorts therefore he was not coming to pick us up either and we would have to find other means of transportation. Being that most of our money was spent on excursions and activities we did not have additional funds on us to pay for a taxi. This was an extreme inconvenience being that when we booked with Riu Tequila we were told that our transfers were free. We ended up having to pay $80 a piece for two cabs ($180 total including tip) in order for our party of five to fit in 2 cabs with our luggage. The front desk clerk was not helpful in helping us obtain transportation nor did he ask how our stay was he was only concerned about cutting off our red wristbands from our wrists. On top of the horrible experience we had, our maid threw away the box that the cake came in, threw away or stole our smart watch bands and took plates and cups from our room without asking. We were a party of 5 who paid our hard earned money to come to the Riu Tequila for vacation and have never had such a bad experience as the one we experienced this weekend. I have never felt so racially profiled as I did at this resort. The staff needs training on how to handle and deal with other cultures/races. I will never stay at this resort again and may never return to the Riu resorts again.
