I had the most horrid experience here this morning. After paying $400 for a taxi here, I waited in a line to the entrance of the park. All I wanted was to walk to the beach. I was met my an incredibly rude female ticket officer, I asked her politely where to pay for entrance to walk to the beach. She threw up her hands and pointed to the left. I figured it out myself and walked to the ticket booth which is not clearly signed. Two miserable woman behind the desks barely looking up to greet me and answer my questions about entrance to beach (without visiting ruins). I paid my $60 pesos on my card and during this time I pulled out my residency card and asked if residents have to pay the fee too. The rude woman shouted at me saying it’s only free for locals. I asked this as my Mexican friend gets into the park for free (I’ve been with him in his car), I thought maybe the residency card would have benefits as it does for other entrance fees and ferry rides etc. I thought it was worth asking, no harm right..
I smiled and asked for my wristband as I saw a box of wristbands on the desk. She told me to get the band at the entrance. I walked back to the entrance to the rude female ticket officer. She shouted at me and told me I can’t enter without wristband. I showed her my ticket and told her that the lady at the ticket desk told me to get it here. She argued with me as though I was lying and trying to sneak in. I showed her my ticket and proof of payment. She questioned me and asked me what the ticket desk woman looked like. I said “she had dark hair, brown eyes and looked Mexican”. The lady then screamed at me accusing me of being racist!! I quietly suggested that was not my intent but I hadn’t paid attention to any other details of the ticket desk lady. She simply is Mexican and those were her features. She told me to follow her to the ticket desk. We got there and she spoke to the rude ticket clerk in Spanish (which I understood). She told them I was racist and to give me my money back. The ticket clerk told her I was screaming at them for a discount. The entire scenario was bizarre. I was in such a good mood on arrival, I was polite, I never rose my voice, I removed my sunglasses to look them in the eyes, I smiled and I showed absolute respect. I’ve lived here for 3 years and have never experienced such hostile behavior. For my first time in 3 years I felt intimidated and abused by these ticket clerks. The lady handed me my money back and told me I was not allowed entrance. What an absolute shocking experience. How does a ticket clerk dictate who gains entrance?! I paid my fee, I wasn’t given the wristband, accused of being racist when describing the ticket clerk exactly as she looked- how is that racist?! I felt like I was in some sort of a scam. I felt uneasy and couldn’t wait to leave. The taxis out of the park then wanted to charge me $1000pesos back to centro.
I’ve been to the ruins area 3 times before. This new system of having to pay entrance to walk to the beach is absolute BS! What are we paying for exactly. I ended up walking back to centro 3km and getting a taxi all the way around to that beach Playa Pariaso.
Shocking experience, I will NEVER take my friends to the ruins again and I would not recommend visiting, purely because of the hostile welcome at the entrance. Complete money making scam and no organisation, no friendliness or welcome to guests. Tulum is a gem but people like this unfortunately give it a bad name.
I wasn’t the only visitor treated badly. On arrival the ticket lady was forcing visitors to drink their bottled water suggesting they can’t take it in. On a hot day of 34’C weather at 12 noon it should be illegal to tell people they can’t carry water with them on a 40 min walk to the ruins!!!!
Rather visit Coba ruins where the locals are welcoming and friendly.
The irony of the situation is I was being accused of being racist for describing what the Mexican girl behind the counter looked like - while the national park only charge tourists the tax to enter, surely...

Read moreThere’s a ticket stand as soon as you get off the collectivo and they’ll try to sell you a guided tour with the transport included and cenote access somewhere 10km away for nearly 3000 pesos. The actual ticket office is just 100 meters down the road so no transport needed. As soon as you tell them you’re okay walking 100m and would like to do the cenotes on a separate day, the sweet talk and tone will change instantly and they won’t even tell you where the ticket office is. Don’t fall for it. They’ll put lots of laminated price lists in front of you, switching from one to the other really fast not giving you the chance to keep up and before you know it, you may have paid for additional things you never requested. I was also told I’ll wait forever at the ticket office. There were literally 2 people in front of me. I entered immediately with no wait and the golf carts which are free for ticket holders collect you instantly and drive you around the park, that same transport they tried to sell you for 2850 pesos. They’ll also claim the information is only provided in Spanish and try to convince you to pay for a guide. There’s information both in Spanish and...
