On a quick one-day stop in Matsumoto we knew we'd have to come by here. Staying at the Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu, it was a short 10/15 minute walk to get here, it was a very cute shopping street with maybe 20 stores and 10 places to grab a bite to eat. We stopped at the Storytime Cafe (separate review left) for lunch and then strolled through here to shop and take in the sites. Being situated next to a running canal and not busy at all for a Sunday afternoon really added to the atmosphere, if you find yourself in Matsumoto this is a must visit. We were lucky on this particular Sunday to happen by a small "flea market" type area where some food stalls were setup and handicrafts on sale (we purchased an oversized cotton candy for only 600Y and a handmade "cat spoon" for 1,000Y), additionally a Japanese man had his bunnies out and about down by the canal and we were able to pet and feed them, which was super cool! Love Matsumoto, love Nawate Shopping Street.

If you happen to visit Matsumoto Castle, don’t miss this beautiful street that themed as Frog. This street is full of frog themed and other animal key rings, small bags, toys and other things taken as souvenirs by tourists of different countries. In front of the street, lies two frogs but I don’t know much about the history. However, price is overpriced as this place is generally crowded and packed. In between, you can find 100 remarkable waters and temple. There is one Nepali Restaurant named Asian Station which serves momo and Naan with chicken curry. Anyway, the street is fun to walk and spend some with friends.

■A Charming Retro Shopping Street Perfect for a Stroll During Your Matsumoto Trip Located about a 15-minute walk from Matsumoto Station and just 5 minutes from Matsumoto Castle, Nawate Street Shopping District is a quaint and nostalgic little street filled with retro charm. It sits right in front of Yohashira Shrine, making it a great place to visit right after a peaceful shrine stop. The street features quirky frog-themed decorations and statues, which make for fun and unique photo spots. You'll find a variety of delightful shops lining the street—from traditional Japanese sweets stores to stylish craft and gift shops, making every step enjoyable. There are also plenty of trendy cafes and restaurants nearby that not only serve delicious food but also offer picture-perfect dishes, making them popular spots for both locals and tourists. It’s a lovely blend of old-time charm and modern flair, and a perfect place to take a relaxing walk while exploring Matsumoto.

I visited this area in mid-July 2023. There are plenty of souvenir shops, cafes, and snack stalls around. Right at the entrance, you’re welcomed by a frog statue—super cute and unique! I really loved the retro vibe of the whole place. If you walk further in, there are lots of charming little alleys to explore. Definitely worth taking your time to wander around!

A small street nearby the canals, very good for photography-spot with two frog in front and Shrine. There are some of the Cafe and Restaurant along the street, also with shop and souvenir, expecting to be more on souvenir shop. The street is on the way to Matsumoto Castle, is really good tor spending time wandering around this area.

Visited Nawate Shopping Street on a Monday afternoon, but most of the shops were closed, not sure if it was because of the rain or just a quiet day. The whole street has a frog theme, which is cute, but with so many shops shut, the vibe felt a bit empty. Might be more enjoyable when it's livelier, but for me it was just okay.
