Grotten Van Valkenburg — Attraction in Valkenburg aan de Geul

A group of us English tourists (4) and one couple of Americans were among a cave tour Wednesday 10/6/2025 along with two other friends and around twelve Dutch visitors. The Guide only spoke of the experience in his native tongue even though I reminded him that we couldn’t understand him although we had a good idea as we had previously read a printed sheet of information. On the last area of the walking tour part15 there is a point where all lights are switched off and it becomes absolutely Pitch black in darkness; really scary! Whilst us six were looking at one of the wall etchings the rest of the group moved on in silence, when we turned to see which direction they had gone, (there were 5 different tunnels), it was only a matter of around 12 seconds and they were gone. We all shouted and whistled into the darkness but no response. Apparently when our other two friends in the party told the Guide that we were missing there was no urgency on the part of him. We (the lost group) followed exit signs to eventually come to a big steel door with slotted openings at the top facing the castle walls and after while of shouting for help a lady rang the office desk and a man and woman came to rescue us. The big door was chained and padlocked, this needs immediate attention as we could have suffered the same fate as two boys had in the past. Deal...

Wo fang ich an.... Was mal wichtig ist zu wissen....es ist keine natürliche Höhle!!! Bitte nicht damit verwechseln. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Art Stollen der ins Kalkstein getrieben wurde. Über etliche KM erstreckt in der Vergangenheit sind heute glaube ich 2 km begehbar. Diese wird mit einem Tourführer geleitet und war recht informativ. In der "Höhle" gibt es verschiedene Malereien und 3D-Gebilde . Wir waren damals mit einer großen Gruppe da und sind in mehreren kleinen Gruppen eingeteilt und geführt worden. Ein Teil zu Fuß der andere mit einer kleinen "Bahn". Unsere Erfahrung war durchweg positiv . Kleinenes Manko, leider kann man nicht alles an Bildern sehen bei der Tour, schade - gerne hätte ich mal mehr Links oder rechts geschaut. Ich glaube eine Tour ohne Führung wird nicht Angeboten aus Gründen der Sicherheit bzw Vandalismus...

Schöne Grotte mit feinem Weihnachtsmarkt. 10 € Eintritt ist nicht wenig, aber die Preise des Marktes sind absolut ok! Eine harmonische Stimmung und die gegenseitige Rücksichtnahme untereinander (z.B. bei Fotos) waren sehr angenehm. Die Verkäufer sind ausnahmslos freundlich, auch wenn nichts gekauft wird. Wir waren Samstag gegen Mittag dort. Der große Parkplatz oberhalb der Grotte kostet ebenfalls 10€- für den Tag. Zur Grotte geht es bergab, aber der Rückweg, gerade für Mobilität eingeschränkte Menschen, sollte bedacht werden. Der Eindruck um die Grotte ist auch gut, die Preise für Waffeln und Kaffee "nicht preiswert", aber lecker :-). Eine Toilette im Karten-Verkaufsraum ist vorhanden und barrierefrei. Auch in der Grotte befinden sich Toiletten. In der Stadt haben wir uns nicht aufgehalten. War mal...
