I recently visited the Gemeentegrot Christmas market in Valkenburg, Netherlands and had a great time. The market itself is located inside of caves, which added a really cool and unique element to the experience.
One of the things I appreciated most about the market was the temperature inside the caves. Despite being below freezing outside, the temperature inside the caves was a comfortable 12°C. This made it a great place to escape the cold and enjoy the holiday spirit.
The food at the market was also really good, with a good variety of vendors offering a range of options. I do wish there had been more vendors, as the market seemed a bit crowded at times. However, overall it was a enjoyable experience.
One thing to note is that parking can be an issue at the Gemeentegrot Christmas market. There is limited parking available and it is necessary to purchase parking tickets at least 2 days in advance. It is also worth noting that the market can get quite crowded, so it is a good idea to plan ahead and try to avoid peak times if possible.
Despite these minor issues, I had a great time at the Gemeentegrot Christmas market and would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique holiday experience. The market is a great place to enjoy good food, shop for holiday gifts, and get into the...
Read moreVery Nice attraction to visit. We visited during Christmas and it had a Christmas market inside with so many Photo Booth stations that were fun for kids. Also a few food/coffee corners. Though not many free seats. 😅 Nice boards about history of the cave and the mine inside it. We booked the ticket in advance and a very short line at entrance on a Friday. But ticket office wasn’t busy too. Ticket fee worth the cave. As it’s quite long. A few parkings in the village that one can park and walk through the village. After the cave one can visit the Castle too. Quite a history and also a nice view on the village, though we were there on a misty day but still beautiful.
I highly recommend it.
I heard there are geology tours to the cave too. Hope to do one of that in future too.
My suggestions to the Village: -More signs on the cave history inside, I heard mine was active even during the Roman time but didn’t see any info board about this. At least in English.
-Good to have an info officer inside the cave that can answer simple questions of the visitors, For instance we loved to know if any bats occur in...
Read moreWe made a spontaneous decision to visit the cave on the second day of Christmas and purchased our tickets that same day. The only time slot available was at 5:00 PM, so we went for it. It was incredibly busy, but we appreciated the time slot system. Given the crowd, it would have been chaotic—and potentially unsafe—without it.
This was our first time visiting the Gemeentegrot, and we were excited to experience the Christmas market and the festive lights.
Earlier that day, we had visited another cave, but this one was definitely larger and more impressive. While it was a fun experience, we don’t feel the need to return.
The decorations and lights were enjoyable, but the items for sale weren’t particularly unique, and most of them were quite expensive. The entrance fee was about €10 per person, which felt a bit pricey for what was offered.
That said, it was still a nice experience to have during the holidays. If you’ve never been before, it’s worth seeing for the atmosphere, the impressive size of the cave, and the festive lights. For us, though, one...
