Overall a pretty good gym for the price you pay, some things I don't like and some thing I do.
Equipment and Layout:
The gym area is quite small, especially the 'free weights' area - I feel they could have chosen some equipment that best fits the space they have.
For example, they have installed two new large platforms and racks with bumper plates - this is great as it was most definitely needed for deadlifts.
However, the size is very unnecessary and takes up a lot of gym floor. I understand other city fitness gyms have these platforms, but they also have a much more open space to work with.
If they were to have gone with a 'box' gym set up with racks against the wall and 'half' platforms or what is known as Deadlift platforms, they would have been able to fit 4-6 rack and platform combos and still have space leftover.
The 'max rack' is another overly large piece of equipment that takes up a tonne of space, for little gain. In reality, the max rack is a flawed idea as the instability forward and backward coupled with the sideways stability makes it cancel each other out - you may as well just have a Smith Machine and then a regular barbell and rack combo.
Overall Gym Vibe:
The vibe here is absolutely rubbish, and it doesn't matter what time of day you come - It's hard for staff in these cheap large membership base gyms to control gym etiquette, however a lot of simple things could be done to improve on this.
Staff could walk the gym floor and engage with members, rather than group together around the front desk. I'm not meaning sit on the floor and have a yarn with everyone, though simply walking through and getting to learn the names of the regular gym goers, asking someone how their training is going etc and the dreaded task of asking members to comply to etiquette and put the weights away after use. If staff were regularly walking the gym floor and doing this in a positive manner it would go along way in improving the overall vibe.
Quite a few times I have spoken with other members about their lack of etiquette, asking them to put the weights away or to stop dropping the weights (before the platform) etc and haven't had any ill response.
A couple of the younger guys were a bit unhappy and puffed their chest out, though they still realised they were wrong.
The offenders always know that it's not right, but being that no staff are around they try their luck. NZ overall has a relatively 'moral' society and comply to rules, so if staff are more present and make an effort it will definetly make a difference.
I use this gym for convenience when I'm limited with time, but the moment I have time to travel further I use any other city fitness as the vibe here with all these young inconsiderate members makes for a headache (literally, as they are so obnoxiously load lmao)
Personal Trainers:
Some of the trainers are an absolute delight and very friendly polite, even so when they are training themselves. Some however, are terribly rude and not following gym etiquette, 3 trainers in particular I often see leave equipment out, weights on the bar, don't clean up etc with a client or when they are training on their own time and even more frustrating these same 3 trainers have taken equipment from me or asked me to finish so they can use it. This is a gym, not a personal...
Read moreGreat gym, especially since you have access to all the branches for $6.99. The Wairau CityFit has the usual cardio area: treadmills, row machines, ellipticals etc. It also has a room for classes that is available to use when not-in-use and within staffed hours - great place for core workouts. It has two areas of machine weights, which have a range of old and new equipment, so there's a lot. Going downstairs leads you to the free weights, of which is a little crammed, but has what most would need for their workouts. Personally love this gym, but it lacks a wide cable machine, a dedicated deadlift area and the air con doesn't work in areas and at certain times. Also when machines break, it takes a while for repairs. It does also get quite busy during peak hours (Mon-Thu 5-9pm). Despite these cons, I would still recommend this gym because it has a good atmosphere and is definitely...
