Evans bay marina is a special little spot. It's always busy during the day with people walking their dogs and children ,towing boats down to the water , fishing and generally enjoying themselves. If I had a motorhome I would go stay there and brush my teeth. Maybe it's an unspoken code..you must brush your teeth either standing inside the door of your motorhome ,or just outside it.. Maybe it's a territorial thing. Or maybe there's just not enough elbow room inside..? Whatever the case io do it , just to blend in and be cool and stuff. The marina also has public toilets which are probably the nicest - best kept facilities in Wellington . There's even murals! A giant sculpture is also a feature here. It's a giant orange needle that tips whichever way the wind is blowing . The stronger the wind ,the further it tips . I guess it's in context with the airport which is close enough that you can see the planes as they take off and come in to land throughout the day . Depending on wind strength and direction that is . Because sometimes the planes are all doing their thing over the Lyall bay side of the airport . They don't rely on the giant needle to decide which side to use ,however , they have their own little tiny orange windsocks for that , and a control tower full of sensors and special algorithms and clever people who are specially trained in licking their finger and holding it up in the wind to assess wind strength...
Read moreProbably the best official freedom camping location in Welly. Almost always full all the time in high season, best time to grab a spot is before noon after people wake up and leave. Possible to wait for a spot to empty as people leave for the ferry but you have to be on your toes as there sometimes are multiple vans waiting. Two flushing toilets open 24/7. Water fountain for drinking but none for filling up bottles. Might be tough if you’re sensitive to sound, campers come in to look for free spots throughout the evening into the night as the last ferries from Picton carries campers here until about midnight. No issue for me though 🤷🏻♀️ if you can’t find a spot, I recommend reading through the freedom camping bylaw document on Wellington district councils website to look for prohibited or restricted areas so you won’t get fined. I don’t recommend...
Read moreAwesome place to stay, I walked into the city took 40mins, 15min drive to Weta Workshop, only a toilet no shower but can pay $5 to shower up at the aquatic centre didn't even need to swim to do so. (Be aware though those showers are sensor activated so they will go off on you fully clothed if get too close haha.) Only downside with this site is not much security and very windy but if you get a good spot away from the water I think there is less wind and if you have a full carpark of campers you feel kind of strength in numbers anyway. Crazy how inner city the site is really compared to other places I made sure I got in before 3pm though, you don't want to be turning up at 6pm you will probably be...
