Review of a family comprising of two adults and one 9 year old.
Sunday 21st April 2024 Morning10am - open-ended ability to return until end of day. First of all, we were most impressed with the well humored and well educated guides that gave talks, we were able to see the Kiwi in the first Kiwi house, also in the other Kiwi house, the cameras to give us a better view because on our visit the sweet Kiwi was sunggled up having a snooze. It was lovely to see a clear poster advertising if people are not able to see kiwi that they can go seek staff who would be happy to help the visitors view them. We were extremely excited to find 4 Tuatara and on which we were told there actually are 17 and the wonderful staff member then guided us into the Barry Rowe Aviary to feed the Forest birds, an up close encounter with these birds was incredible. We walked through and found another 4 Tuatara, one was even on the footpath, a very incredible memory made!
Might be helpful to note that all donations and proceeds go to running and funding the growth of endangered and critically in need of human intervention to raise their population. Having a coin donation box was rather awesome to see.
I cannot think of a better time spent and we are very happy with our experience.

My partner and I initially popped in one morning to bide our time before a rafting excursion. We only disappointed ourselves by not allowing more than an hour. During this time, we realized there was so much to absorb in this perfect sanctuary. We rapidly changed our itinerary and stayed an extra night in the area so we could return the following day to discover more. The tickets were good for two days !
If you time it correctly, you will have the opportunity to not only see kiwi birds, but watch them eat. You will get the opportunity to feed kakarikis from your hands or long fin eels. Every staff member is friendly and boasting as much information as you're willing to hear.
In all my years; in any sanctuary, zoo, or reservation that I've been to across 10 countries, I have never met people who are more committed and excited to be part of bird conservation than the staff here at the Otorohanga Kiwi House. The devotion and enthusiasm of the keepers to put kiwi birds back in the wild is incredibly inspiring. Kudos to Mark, K.A, Andrew, Jo & the rest of the team that are working hard on saving the kiwi bird! A truly wonderful day at the Otorohanga Kiwi Place for a wonderful cause. 5 stars is not nearly...
