What a stellar little Holiday Park this is!
I'll be honest, I don't really like Holiday Parks, opting to usually stay at a proper Hotel or Motel. And even more honestly, I really didn't expect to find a decent Holiday Park in Otorohanga of all places.
The park is located just off the Otorohanga Heavy Vehicle Bypass. This makes access really easy. I thought there might be a lot of road noise, but I really didn't notice it too much. There is a railway line running against the back of the property which was noisey at times. But the Main Trunk Line doesn't see too much Train Traffic these days. Being situated in an Industrial Area, there is quite a bit of noise that starts up quite early. I live Rurally, so I do tend to notice these things more than others might. That all said, I didn't find the noise overly offensive and I still slept soundly.
The Holiday Park has set up an absolutely brilliant system where you can Check In, make bookings ect, all from a Kiosk located in a little room. I had booked online that morning, so all I had to do was punch in my booking reference, and my booking popped up immediately. It then prints off a receipt with all your room/site details on it, and also the Gate and Wifi Codes. Heaps of Maps available of the park, and also surrounding areas.
On walking out of the little office, I was greeted by the very friendly proprietress, who called over to see if I needed some help. Ended up spending quite some time talking to her. She was very engaging and fascinating to talk too. She excitedly told me about their future plans for the Park, and also about the absolute massive effort they have put into making the park what it currently is.
My site must have been one of the largest in the Park, with super easy access. All the sites were surrounded by plenty of shady trees, and had picnic tables and stuff as well. Both Water and Power available at each site. Ablutions block is located close by. They were all really spacious and fastidiously tidy. No timers on the showers, which were plenty hot, and had awesome pressure.
The park has some awesome family friendly amenities. There is a playground by the ablutions block, and towards the back of the park there is a large heated swimming pool, and some Spa Pools as well. Lots of places to sit and relax around the pool. What a fantastic asset it is.
There does seem to be some permanent residents living in the park. However they cleverly seem to be concentrated along the back of the property.
A powered site here at the Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park was way under half of a Powered Site at nearby Waitomo Caves, and I would argue, far superior in every way. Whilst I didn't get to stay in their Motel/Cabin accommodation, they look very comfortable.
Highly recommended this Holiday Park. What a fantastic place to bring a family on Holiday. I will...

Read moreThis was the worst place we have stayed anywhere is NZ or on our extensive world travels. A toilet cistern with a hole in and exposed connection pipe. There was more water running down the back of the shower than coming through it.chipped and mismatched crockery and the barest of essentials, no courtesy tissues or any hospitable touches like other places we’ve stayed in. One pillow per bed no spares. No toiletries in the bathroom , no working fans or heaters in bathroom , scungy, grubby tea towels and dirty dish brushes, in the times of covid the dish brush was a filthy health hazard. . Chips out of skirting boards and everything grubby, I cleaned everything before we used it, and left it cleaner than when we arrived. We travel with a small dog so stay in pet friendly units. Our dog has her own bed and is not allowed on furniture. Most places charge nothing extra for her the odd one has charged us $10 for extra vacuuming. No mention was made of a charge for our dog. We were charged $140 to stay here the same price as a beautiful spacious unit in Hawera the night before. Normally I would have moved on but it was late and we were tired. It was crowded they had crammed a double bed and single into the small space there was barely room to move one of us had to crawl across the other to get into bed. When we left next day I complained to the manager who had nothing much to say but later emailed me saying we had only paid $120 for the unit as there was a $20 charge for the dog which she claimed had been explained at the time. This was an outright lie. This holiday park is largely used by contractors she said, so obviously in her mind they don’t deserve decent facilities. It’s on a main road and extremely noisy. I would avoid it...
