One of the most terrible, drastic and sickening experiences. The animals were in terrible condition; some were sick, some had no water and food, their enclosures were lacking enough physical space and separate rooms to escape the visibly unwanted attention from the very unorderly visitors. There were no staff to regulate the behavior of the people. People were smoking into the animals’ faces, feeding them chips and pop-corn, screaming and knocking on their enclosures. The animals are visibly distressed, some were hyperventilating. As for specific examples: the bears had litter in their enclosure, there was a sick monkey with missing fur (such animals needs treatment and isolation), the wolves were barely moving (probably coping with Skopje’s 36 °C), there was a goat with an abscess on her teet, other monkeys had advertisement in their enclosure (the same monkeys were circling in their cage, visibly trying to escape), the zebra was standing in front of a wall, without any signs of life, deadly staring into the wall, the Dama damas’ had no division for the males who were constantly fighting. There were free-roaming bunnies being chased by kids while their mother was laughing and videotaping them while smoking a cigarett. No animal had enough green pasture (except for some of the birds). We left after good 45 minutes of this living horror. I am appalled at this “ZOO”. I hope that they close as soon as possible and the animals get into the right hands. This “ZOO” treats animals as a mean of making money, it does not work as a facility providing animals with the life they deserve...
Read moreI recently visited this magnificent zoo with my family, and it was an enchanting experience from start to finish. The moment we stepped through the gates, we were transported into a world of wonder and wildlife. The lush greenery and thoughtfully designed enclosures made us feel like we had entered a different realm, one where we were mere guests in the animal kingdom.
The diversity of animals at this zoo is truly astounding. From majestic lions and playful elephants to exotic birds and curious primates, there was something to captivate every member of our family. The enclosures were spacious and well-maintained, providing a comfortable and natural habitat for the animals.
What truly sets this zoo apart is its commitment to conservation and education. Throughout our visit, we were impressed by the informative signs and dedicated staff members who shared their knowledge and passion for wildlife. It was a fantastic opportunity for our family to learn about the importance of preserving these incredible creatures and their habitats.
The only drawback of our visit was the parking situation, which was a bit of a challenge. However, I must emphasize that this minor inconvenience was far outweighed by the extraordinary experience we had inside the zoo itself.
In summary, this zoo is a gem that deserves recognition for its dedication to wildlife conservation, its educational value, and the sheer beauty of its animal exhibits. Despite the parking hiccup, our family had an unforgettable day here, and we can't wait to return for another adventure in the...
Read moreThe Skopje Zoo was founded in 1926 by a three member commission led by Stanko Karaman. When it opened, the zoo covered only 4 hectares (9.9 acres), and exhibited only a few animals which it had received as gifts. With a decision by the Skopje city council in 1965, and the new town zoning in 1966, the zoo was expanded to its current size.
Today the Zoo is located on an area of 12 hectares and has a collection of 300 animals from 56 species (mammals, birds, reptiles). It has administrative part, workshop, veterinary clinic and children's amusement park. Orka the giraffe is a young male two years old. Adopted by the Berlin Zoo, it's a donation from "Orka Holding" Group - Elijah Foundation Kamcev. More than 40 years there was no giraffe in Skopje Zoo and this is a special opportunity for the young generations to get acquainted with this fantastic wild animal from Africa.
Skopje Zoo has 35 employees and has established cooperation with other zoos as: Bitola, Zagreb, Belgrade, Nuremberg, Palic, Ljubljana, Cologne, Moscow, Vienna. Since 2006 the zoo began cooperation with EAZA (European Association of Zoo and Akvarii), and since May 2009 it has gained the status of a candidate for member of EAZA.
