The museum was one of a very few establishments that still required proof of vaccination. We of course carry copies of our Vax cards on our phones. Best part is that entrance was F-R-E-E ! Everything and everywhere costs here in Bohol but entry to their National Museum was free. Yay for free!
The building that houses the museum was, I believe, formerly a government building. It suffered serious damage from the 2013 earthquake. The civic leaders then decided to restore and update the building and convert it into a museum and that's how the Bohol National Museum came about.
The museum is not very big. 2 stories with an open center court. All white walls, tile floors on the ground level and solid wood floors on the upper level. Very museum-like.
The main wing on the ground floor was featuring selected works of Bohol native Napoleon Veloso Abueva who died in 2018. Clearly, Mr. Abueva is a highly skilled artist who not only was a very good sculpture but was also a very talented furniture designer. It is highly likely we saw some of his other works at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Intramuros. I especially liked his self portrait sculpture and his Head of a Horse sculpture.
For me, this was the highlight of our visit to this museum. The museum did have other displays including a history of Bohol but in my opinion, those are minor compared to the work of Mr. Abueva, the father of modern Philippine sculptor and was a National Artist...

To understand... Why do I give 5 stars so rarely? Out of over 360 ratings, I realised that there are no businesses that are 100% perfect. I rate businesses in relation to an area, such as a city and the surrounding area. Most businesses in an area sell similar products of different qualities, and I rate these products up to a maximum of 4 stars. Therefore, I decided to give 5 stars if a business in this region has a unique selling point. This could be a unique product, an awesome view, or cosy surroundings that set them apart from other businesses in the area. Even if their products are not perfect, I can still give a five-star rating if there is something spec...
Read moreThe National Museum—Bohol is located at Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, and was opened to the public in July 2018. The old site of Bohol’s national museum was in the 1860 Provincial Capitol Building, which was reconstructed after it had been damaged by an earthquake in 2013.
The museum dedicated sections where the results of the archaeological excavation and exploration of the sites in Anda Peninsula are displayed, giving insights into the prehistory of the island of Bohol. Along with this, the museum organizes artwork exhibits, such as the one featuring the Boholano artist Napoleon Abueva. The exhibit features dozens of significant works from the artist’s collection and the tools he used in sculpting. Abueva was known as the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture and was a National Artist for Sculpture when he was still alive. These recognitions are the first for a Boholano artist.
An entire section also displays the rehabilitation efforts made on the old churches damaged during the earthquake. Also housed in the museum is documentation on the protection, conservation, and preservation of cultural properties of Bohol and Eastern Samar, which were both hit by the 2013 earthquake. These are important since they are considered National Cultural Treasures and Important...
