The Quinta da Alagoa was founded on the 16th century by the Jesuit monks. There are some historical references stating that Father Antonio Vieira lived here (or at least spent his vacation times here) around 1641 and 1653.
Later, with the extinction of the religious orders, king D. José I donated the homestead to José Francisco da Cruz, and turned it into a “morgadio” in 1763.
Later in this same century, one of his descendants -Francisco Inácio da Cruz Alagoa - was renowned as one of the great landlords of the Oeiras region (he also owned the Quinta de Santo António).
Queen D. Maria II turned the “morgados” into Barons of Alagoa in 1841.
After going through a series of divestitures, in 1980 the farm was parceled out and the town council acquired some of the remaining land in 1994 to build a university there.Somehow, the project became obsolete and this piece of the old farm is currently a public Park, designed by Architect João Ferreira Nunes - who won the 2nd Prize for Landscape Architecture in 2008 .
The area is now very nourished by the local population as an informal space of leisure, with its’ two playgrounds, tennis court and a lagoon. The free peacocks that inhabit the park, are famous, for good and bad reasons.
One of the winners of the first DNA-Cascais business ideas’ contest, the Vitamimos Food Education Center, is Also located here. There is a cultural area project on the drawing board for the remaining ruins.

And there are flowers and a big grass field to play or just lay there. One can find a café to enjoy an expresso or eat an ice cream overlooking the lake. There also is another place one can have a healthy snack, but I found it very expensive. It is a tranquil place I...
