Located in the center of Ponta do Sol, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz is of great historical and architectural interest.
It is one of the most emblematic buildings on the west coast of the island of Madeira.
This temple was built at the end of the 15th century. However, in 1708 the facade was redesigned to enlarge the church space. It therefore shows typical traces of Manueline and neo-Mannerist religious architecture.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz consists of a single nave and a square bell tower.
Inside there are several side chapels, with the ceiling of the main chancel, a so-called alfarje, in Spanish-Arabic style, standing out.
This room also contains walls covered with tiles (azulejos), choir stalls and a high altarpiece made of gilded and blue-gray wood carving with five oil paintings.
The baptismal font also deserves special attention. It is decorated with green Mudejar-style ceramics and is believed to have come from the city of Seville in Spain. It is a unique work in Portugal.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz also has a number of precious silver religious objects.
