This place will immerse you in a holy vibe. You will find a serene peace in the atmosphere while visiting this place. The four gates of the Rameswaram temple are architectural masterpieces. This place is not only considered as one of the chardhams in India but, it also falls under the category of 12 jyotirlingas. This place has a rich history in place. This is the very place from where Lord Rama, alongwith the assistance of his vanar sena, Lord Hanuman and Lord Lakshman, marched towards Sri Lanka to free his wife Mata Sita from the custody of the demon king Ravana. Later, after fight with Ravana, they visited this place again and Mata Sita established the Shivalinga here. Later Lord Hanuman returned with another Shivalinga (from Kailash) which is also erected at the side. Since then, the deity is getting worshipped to this date.

The management of the temple is commendable. Before entering the temple, you should take 3 dips in the holy water of the Agniteertham. Then you should enter the temple through the north gate to take bath in the 22 kunds (bais kunda snana). There are dedicated places in front of the gate where you can keep your shoes and sleepers but majority of people leave their sleepers in front of the gate itself. Mobile phones are allowed inside the temple premises but it has to be kept in silent mode. Also, taking pictures of the main deity is not allowed. After entering through the north gate, you can buy tickets for the bais kunda snana at a nominal price. You should pass through and take bath in the 22 kunds (assistants are there who will uplift water from the wells and will sprinkle the water on you). Legend says that Lord Rama created these kunds with his remaining arrows (after returning from Lanka) which helped in quenching the thirst of his assistants. After having done with the bais kunda snana, the devotees should change their drenched clothes in the changing room. After this, the devotees must pass through the long passageway to enter the main temple for darshan. 3 separate ques (named free darshan, special darshan and quick darshan) are there for darshan. Devotees can buy tickets for special or quick darshan according to their preference. No tickets are required for free darshan. After darshan, one can roam around the temple to view and pray at the other small temples situated in the temple premises. Temple timings are from 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm.

The Pamban island is well connected to Madurai by bus and car. The direct train service from Madurai to Rameswaram is now paused because of some repair work in the Pamban railway bridge. But, if you want to reach Rameswaram by train then you can reach at the Mandapam station first. From there, you can take auto or cab to Rameswaram. Also if you are coming from a distance, then you can first reach Madurai junction railway station. From there, you can hire cab or else take the bus from the the MGR bus stand to Rameswaram. Also there's an airport in Madurai. So, reaching Rameswaram via road, rail or air is not at all problematic. Also a number of good comfortable hotels are existing in this place. Also you can book local sightseeing services via the hotel authority. There are various places worth exploring here. This is a must visit place for all and people from all age groups will find happiness here.
