Roundhouse Aquarium — Attraction in Manhattan Beach

While checking out the area, we decided to stop in the aquarium since we were already on the pier. We realized it didn't open until 2 p.m., which seemed late to me. Since it was 10 minutes until 2, we decided to wait. Some employees started bringing stuff outside, but it was more than 10 minutes past 2 that they let people in. I get and generally love the laid-back atmosphere of Southern California, but waiting an extended period of time after opening to get in was kinda annoying, especially because we needed to leave by 3 and were concerned we wouldn't have enough time on the parking meter to see all that we wanted to see.

Once we got inside, we discovered it is a free aquarium, but donations for operation are appreciated! You can make a cash or electronic donation.

The aquarium itself isn't very big, but there are some neat things to see! My two highlights were seeing an octopus moving around its tank and the volunteer that was there explaining and teaching things to people! I learned a few new things while I was there! I always appreciate a chance to learn more about the world around me! The man was very friendly and did a fantastic job engaging with visitors!

Overall, there were many interesting things to see and experience! However, some of the displays could be improved for a better viewing experience. Some were hard to see because of poor lighting or light glare. The octopus was my favorite thing to see but probably had the worst tank of all. The poor lighting made it more difficult to see with good clarity. There was also a working area by the tank that looked disorganized and blocked good viewing. The octopus looked to be healthy and in good shape, but it could use a bigger, better tank.

So... there we were. Just walking around manhattan beach. Taking a stroll on the pier. Make it to the end and... a SHARK! Oh good it's a statue. Kids get excited though. The building says 'aquarium'. Okay cool we like fish. Head inside. No admission? But there's a touch pool with starfish, muscles, hermit crabs, and some other boring tide pool creatures. But I didn't pay? Head upstairs. Whoa! A cool jellyfish display! Some examples of trash picked up on the beach. A sign saying there's an octopus but I can't see anything. A fake squid. Some goldfish and beta fish. Okay... but it's free? What am I doing here? So random!

Yep. That's how it happened to us. Apparently this aquarium has been here for a while but I just never thought to go in until I brought the kiddos. Then found out it's a non-profit educating the public run by volunteers. A very cool treat to add to your already awesome day walking around the beautiful Manhattan beach. Definitely NOT a destination I would put on your 'to-do' list, but a cool little 'stumble-upon' that will bring a smile to your face....
