In Dutch, it used to be spelled Sankt-Pieter-Burch, and then under German influence it became Sankt-Petersburg. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the original name, Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербург,[ˈsankt pʲɪtʲɪrˈburk]) was restored by a citywide referendum.
