Beyond the sacred icons such as that of Saint Chemon (in golden tones) and the Theotokos "Tuatania," the true marvel is the fresco in the main dome. It likely depicts the Pantocrator, with vivid colors filtering in the natural light. The minute details—such as the gold-leaf halos and the draperies—are breathtaking. The work stands out for its majesty: it occupies the entire space and seems to envelop you in a mystical embrace when you look up.
In the section dedicated to liturgical objects, the inlaid furnishings suggest a meticulous attention to tradition. The atmosphere is intimate and mystical, especially near the main altar. The relics of Saint Gregory Palamas are kept in the church in a small room to the side of the entrance.

Read moreA lovely Byzantine style church in the city centre. Entry is free, of course, as in all churches in Greece. Quite well decorated with icons and wall paintings. Most importantly it holds the relics of Agios Grigorios Palamas, after whom it is named. Palamas was a monk and later archbishop of Thessaloniki. He was a very strong defender of the Orthodox faith. He was made a saint after his death. The church is on a site which dates back to the 13th century, but the building has undergone several reconstructions following times of damage etc....
