Spent an enjoyable and informative few hours in the Museum.
The Museum plays to its strengths, focusing largely on the surrounding Karst region of Slovenia and its cave (speleological) geography - covering mainly the history, topography, and human geography of the Karst.
Interestingly, the Museum is a mixture of the old and the new. The building gives the impression of being a converted mansion. But inventive partitioning breaks up the otherwise blocky spaces and gives the displays a real sense of flow.
The displays themselves are attractive and informative without overwhelming with detail.
Two standout display features for me were a short (5' 48") 1909 film of Postojna and the Cave, and a corridor walls with a simple diagrammatic timeline painted in fluorescent paint (unfortunately the fluorescent tube lights weren't working, missing the full effect). I'm a big fan of fluorescent paint and its ability to bring illustrations alive.
If you're visiting Postojna, don't just see the Cave and Castle precincts. Seek out this Museum and go away with an enjoyable hour or two spent and a deeper understanding of this...
Read moreGreat museum, with lots of family activities. Our 5 year old child loved being able to touch fossils, bones, stalagmites etc. The museum is well laid out and engaging. Offers additional resources for making the most of the visit with children too. We were very impressed, and the staff we spoke to shared that next week a whole new additional floor of family interactives opens so we'll definitely come back next time we visit slovenia. Our highlights were caving exhibits, bones of prehistoric animals found in the local caves, and the cave train.
Free parking at the back of the museum (visitors get a free permit at the museum reception). Our best museum experience in Slovenia so far, and we have...
Read moreChanged our plans due to a rainy day and chose to visit this museum instead of the castle. Turned out to be a real blessing: we were warmly welcomed by the host, a passionate researcher at the facility (which is in fact two-third of the building - the rest forms the museum). In three hours we explored the world of karst, learned everything about the Slovenian caves and even went through the history of men. The interesting information is well dosed and presented in a very catching and interacting manner. Would absolutely recommend to visit this mesmerising...
