Homestead Dam — Attraction in Ekurhuleni Ward 28

It is a nice place to visit. Lots of families with children and walking their dogs. Some even jogging or rowing on the dam or just taking pictures of the beautiful trees and picturesque surroundings. Lots of ducks and geese and other birds which lends a tranquil atmosphere. On the negative side it is a pity that there are no ablutions .... we had to leave everything behind and go to a shopping centre a couple of blocks away to make use of their toilet facilities. We went to the dam to fish and planned to stay for the day which meant that we had to make food ... fortunately we went prepared with our own braai, table and chairs. The existing braais and tables are unusable. There may be water on taps and braai facilities at the other side. We didn't go there as it was crowded since early in the morning. Good for the people staying nearby ... coming from another town as we did, not the most comfortable place to be ... that is besides having to carry everything from your car to the chosen...

First the positives: Place has very large stretches of lawn and shade to sit and relax for picnics and braai. It'd take that much people to get crowded. The park is free and open to the public for fishing and boating activities. There is heavy metro police and private security presence constantly patrolling the length of the park and maintaining peace.

The negatives: Complete absence of toilets, the ones that are there look scary dirty and completely unmaintained, are filled with graffiti and now appear to be locked out from the public. The place is generally run down and in need of some work. Most braai facilities have now completely broken down..the few available are only in the hot sun. The place itself isn't that dirty, but just gives the vibe of a washed up park you'd probably want to...

Homestead Dam is a truly beautiful recreational place to relax and unwind during the week and weekends.

It's also a place where people of all ages and racial groupings gather to jog ,run or walk to keep fit. Exercise equipment has been installed here as well for those opting to use them before/after a run,walk or jog.

Recent additions apart from the fitness equipment is the paved pathway which makes it very rewarding to jog,walk or run.

Homestead Dam appears to be located within a safe environment but don't test "fate" by going alone or in the evenings when few people are around.Stay safe but be alert at all times for criminal elements are...
