There Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is a 104 year old building with over ten thousand ( according to the guide) art pieces on display. The JAG is a great place to go to for a school outing, to entertain yourself and others with works of art from South Africa artists or just to see what there is to offer. I went as a group so we had a tour guide and our teacher with us. The tour guide is comprehensive and allows for good interaction between the group in relation to the art on display. Our teacher made it a challenge by asking design questions and seeing who knew the correct answer. There is three stories to the JAG, a first, second and underground. The gallery is divided into different sections displaying different pieces of art on each of the different stories. It is designed as a big square with a centre courtyard, where you can just sit and relax, converate, eat and wait for the next tour to begin. There is no food place within the gallery so make sure to bring something or cash to eat at the KFC nearby. Their is wide enough space to have wheelchairs and motorised seats to move wheelchair users up and down staircases. There is a shop in the middle featuring many items on sale from R10 -R40000 depending on what you are looking for. In summary I really enjoyed my time at the JAG and would look forward to going again with other...
Read moreThe Joburg Art Gallery (JAG) houses a fantastic blend of incredible artwork. Whether you have an affinity for fine art, painting, photography, conceptual art, sculptures, or drawings it’s all there under one roof.
With that being said, there’s a variety of both contemporary and traditional art. Each room offers visitors a very unique but well curated experience. It’s like being transported through time and space through art. This is encapsulated by the brilliant artwork that this space houses.
Don’t be put off by the location, be open minded because you’re presented with the opportunity to enjoy an unconventional experience while getting a taste of the hustle and bustle of the Joburg CBD. It’s a very surreal experience, one you need to take in with a pinch of salt.
Remember to arrive early in order to enjoy the full experience. There’s so many well executed art pieces that are so nuanced and you need to be there to be there for this sensory feast. Visiting this gallery is something one must do annually as they hold various exhibitions and unique events that are worth experiencing first hand.
As for me, I’ll keep returning to this space and this is something I’ve been doing annually since I was...
Read moreWorth a visit but be warned! Beautiful old building turning into a ruin. Current exhibition "Waiting for Gebane" is a solo exhibition by the South African artist Senzeni Mthwakazi Marasela. Excellent exhibition. It has been hastily displayed as evidenced by slap dash painting over light switches and the spatters on the floor in an attempt to freshen up the space. However, the feeling of neglect is overwhelming and clearly the staff are demoralised:no-one can even be bothered to sweep the courtyard or water the potplants, it seems. Are there no " Friends of..." organisations to help this poor heritage building and valuable space? The slides of the African Artists collection are lying in dust under the stairs. The area surrounding the gallery is a slum. Park your car elsewhere and uber in. Why go there? Entrance is free, there is a worthy collection of SA artists ( on the matric syllabus) and the elegant bones of the building are simply magnificent. Like the Arctic, it is subsiding into non-existence and you may want to say, " I went...
