The vibe in this part of Johannesburg on a Sunday afternoon is really awesome! I do feel though that there is a reluctance to improve basic aspects such as proper and adequate seating in the market under the guise of being true to the rustic and hippie nature of the place. Food options in the market are pretty interesting and decently priced - usually about R70 per serving. The bar on the roof top is always very poorly stocked so don't expect fancy options. R44 will buy you a single shot plus a chaser in a plastic tumbler with ice. After 4pm the place gets really packed with a lot of very experienced and skilled dancers. A lot of the people are regulars and know each other from their respective dance clubs already. Incredibly friendly people all around... but don't mistake the friendliness and someone asking you to dance for flirting. It is also not a great idea to go as a couple if only one of you is a dancer and the one who isn't a dancer does not understand what is really going on there... rather both attend dance class first which is less of a culture shock in terms of personal space invasion. Its held in the Arts on main parking lot where you will be met by irresistible aromas from the food prepared by different stalls downstairs. Great selection! Around 2pm exciting sounds of Cuban music can be heard from the courtyard area,coming from the rooftop salsa above Canteen restaurant. Its fun to go up even if its only yo watch or be envious. This goes on until early evening besides there is a bar up there and a fun crowd without fail.
