Absolutely a great place but very questionable service. My friend and I went there last month as part of our trip. We drank some wine, although were charged for the wrong wine on the bill. We were charged for the higher-end wine when we're partial to the house wine. Probably an error because we were served initially by a jolly male waiter, followed by a quirky female.
Before the bill came we were a bit open-mouthed as we were deciding whether to drink brandy and coke when ordering with the waitress. She dismissively said it was a drink for white people (we were white. My friend loves it but she puts sugar cubes in her white wine) so we felt it was pretty inappropriate, not kosher, even. I then pipped up with, Indian people like the drink too (an equal opportunities beverage) to which she said they wanted to be white.
I feel the staff should not bring their political views to the table as the table has a wonderful vibe, grand ceilings, a solid wall of books up top and a variety of snug, inviting...

Read moreBertrand Cafe really caught me off-guard. It's the place, vibe and environment that I've been looking for in Johannesburg for a very long time. Homely, warm, welcoming and refreshing.
Bertrand's place is divided in three section. An outdoor section by the street with a great view of the busy Maboneng. When you step in your are welcomed by what feels like your grandmother's house but with a twist, urban music, rumba, African jazz and amazing decor. Keep on walking and you'll find yourself in a completely different setting with a bar in a closed section of the restaurant.
The decor will keep you looking around while you enjoy their food. The food is authentic and very rich.
Really worth a visit....
