A very small but nice place to spot some South African birds.
When I think of a “bird sanctuary,” I think of a somewhat large place with staff and events. From that perspective, the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary was underwhelming. It's a small plot of land with a boardwalk and a hide.
That said, if you enjoy identifying local birds, you will enjoy this because you don't often get to see some of these birds. And there are posters of the local species to help you.

Read moreVisited today again after 5 years, i was scared away after the attacks at the hide and cars being stolen. Security has now been introduced, and new fencing with entry-gate that they control has been erected. You have too sign in now. The hide is still in a great condition and well looked after. Sadly the birdlife-sightings is very low and many summer-birds is gone that was always easy too see/photograph in the "old"days. It is lovely to walk around it on the outside and you often see huge tortoises, crowned cranes, blue cranes, duiker, blesbok, sacred Ibis and lots of other waterfowl . Rotary has erected bird viewing hide on the Roper Street side. The bird hide has an education centre with stuffed birds in a labelled permanent display (daylight hours only).
