[정의] 부산광역시 중구 남포동 6가에 있는 부산 국제 영화제 출범과 함께 생성된 영화 거리.

[건립 경위] 중구 남포동 일대는 일제 강점기부터 영화의 거리였다. 1914년에 영화 상설관 ‘욱관(旭館)’이 상설관 경영을 개시한 이후에 보래관(寶來館), 초량좌(草梁座), 행좌(幸座), 부산 극장 등이 들어섰다. 특히 이곳은 1924년에 한국 최초의 영화 제작사였던 조선키네마주식회사가 설립되는 등 한국 영화의 시발점이라는 의미가 있다. 8·15 광복 이후에도 이곳에는 극장들이 자리를 잡아 1960년대에는 20여 개소의 극장이 밀집되었다. 1996년부터 부산 국제 영화제[Pusan International Film Festival]가 개최되면서 극장가를 새롭게 단장하고 그 일대를 자연스럽게 PIFF 광장[1996년 8월 14일]으로 부르게 되었다.

[변천] 1998년 9월 부산광역시 중구청에서 PIFF 광장을 본격적으로 조성하였다. 2010년에 부산의 영어 표기가 ‘Pusan’에서 ‘Busan’으로 바뀜에 따라 PIFF 광장의 명칭도 BIFF 광장으로 변경되었다. 처음에는 조형물 등이 많지 않았으나 중구청이 22억 원의 예산을 들여 BIFF 광장을 재포장하는 등 재정비하여 상징 조형물, 핸드 프린팅, 원형 스타 문양 등이 들어서게 되었다. 2006년에 영화제 기간 중 야외무대가 해운대로 이전하였고, 2011년부터는 해운대 센텀 시티에 전용 극장인 ‘두레라움’이 건립됨으로써 중구 남포동에서는 영화를 상영하지 않는다. 중구 남포동에서는 BIFF 전야제 행사만 개최하고 있다.

[구성] BIFF 광장은 중구 남포동에 소재하는 부산 극장과 대영 시네마가 있는 중심가에 위치한다. 구간은 구 충무동 육교에서 원형 광장을 지나 대영 시네마 쪽까지 428m에 이르고 있다. 보통 이 구간을 ‘비프 광장로’라고 부르는데, 특히 대영 시네마 앞쪽 도로를 ‘BIFF 거리’라고도 한다. BIFF 광장과 영화의 특성을 살리기 위해서 거리에 느티나무, 물결 모양의 가로등, BIFF 상징탑, 원형 스타 문양의 보판을 설치하였다. 그리고 세계 유명 영화인의 손도장인 ‘핸드 프린팅’이 있는데, 메가박스 부산 극장과 대영 시네마 앞 도로에 위치해 있다. 1998년부터 핸드 프린팅이 시작되었는데 이 해에는 씨에진[중국 감독], 제레미 아이언스[영국 배우], 웨인왕[미국 감독], 키타노 다케시[일본 감독 겸 배우], 압바스 키아로스타미[이란 감독], 김기영[한국 감독] 등 6명이 등록하였다.

그 이후에도 2001년에 빔 벤더스[독일 감독], 2002년에 허우 샤오시엔[대만 감독], 2008년에 다리우스 메흐르지[이란 감독], 피터 그리너웨이[영국 감독], 2011년에 윌렘 데포[미국 남배우], 줄리엣 비노쉬[프랑스 여배우]등 총 44명의 핸드 프린팅이 등록되었다[2011년 기준]. 우리나라 사람으로는 김기영[감독], 유영길[촬영 감독], 유현목[감독], 황정순[배우], 신상옥[감독], 최은희[배우], 김수용[감독], 정창화[감독], 이만희[감독], 김승호[배우], 김지미[배우] 등이 있다. 2010년 이전에 BIFF 광장에는 관객들에게 자연스럽게 다가갈 수 있는 거리 공연이나 영화제 관객들을 위한 거리 상점들의 할인 서비스, 영화제 게스트 및 관객들을 위한 휴식 공간이 있었다.

[현황] 부산 국제 영화제의 대부분의 행사가 부산 해운대로 옮겨져 BIFF 광장은 근래 그 명성이 예전 같지 않다. BIFF 광장 주변에는 BIFF란 글자가 새겨진 옷을 입고 가판대에서 장사를 하는 상인들의 모습과 할리우드 영화 테마로 장식한 상가 간판들이 이곳이 영화제의 거리임을 알 수 있게 한다. 또한 BIFF 광장 주변에는 각종 쇼핑몰과 먹거리들이 있으며, BIFF 광장 앞 큰 도로를 건너면 자갈치 시장이 있어서 관광객들에게 여흥과 오락을 제공한다. 최근에는 BIFF 광장에서 TV 예능 프로그램을 제작하기도 하였으며, 각종 드라마와 영화...
