Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village is a charming and historic village located in Gyeongju, South Korea. Known for preserving the traditional lifestyles and architectural styles of the *Silla Dynasty*, the village offers a unique glimpse into Korea's past. The village is especially famous for its well-maintained hanok (traditional Korean houses) and the **Hwangseong Gyochon**, which is an ancestral home of the Gyeongju Choi clan, one of the prominent families during the Silla period. At Gyochon, visitors can stroll through narrow, picturesque lanes lined with traditional homes, and experience the peaceful atmosphere that evokes the past. The houses, with their characteristic tiled roofs and wooden beams, are great examples of the classic Korean architectural style. Many of these homes have been preserved and even restored, with some open to the public, offering visitors a chance to step inside and experience the traditional interiors. One of the village's highlights is **Choi Clan's Village Hall**, where the descendants of the Choi family still celebrate their traditional customs. You can also visit the **Gyeongju Folk Craft Complex** nearby, where artisans continue to practice and sell traditional crafts, such as pottery, embroidery, and wooden sculptures. The village is also well known for its **delicious local cuisine**, especially **ssambap** (rice with various banchan (side dishes) wrapped in leaves), and **hanjeongsik** (a full-course Korean meal). The combination of history, culture, food, and nature makes Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village a captivating place to visit.

⚠️ Be sure to avoid coming during the post lunch break otherwise you might find many things closed between 3pm/15:00 and 6pm/18:00 ⚠️ Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village is a historical village in Gyeongju, South Korea, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Korean life during the Silla Dynasty. The village is well-preserved, with traditional hanok houses showcasing authentic architecture and cultural heritage. It was home to the Choi family, a prominent family during the Joseon period, and their residence, the Gyochon Choi Clan House, is one of the main attractions. Visitors can explore the narrow streets, admire the beautiful traditional buildings, and experience cultural activities such as trying on hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), learning about traditional crafts, or tasting local delicacies. Gyeongju Gyochon Village is also known for its Gyochon Makgeolli, a type of Korean rice wine that can be sampled at various spots within the village. The village is located near other famous Gyeongju attractions, such as Woljeonggyo Bridge and Cheomseongdae Observatory, making it easy to combine with other sightseeing. Entry to the village is free, though some activities or workshops may require a fee. It is a pleasant area to stroll around, and you can easily spend an hour or more exploring the houses, shops, and streets.

A small neighbourhood where various traditional houses were converted to shops, cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. Quite an enjoyable place to explore as there are different things for you to do. There is also a preserved old house for visitors to see how it used be back in the days. Word of advice though, be sure to visit the place before 4pm. When we were here around 5pm, most of the shops were already closed or in the process of closing. Some of the opening hours are up til 5pm. Getting here is also not easy via bus, so we cycled all the way here. With that being said, think this is quite a cool place to spend a couple of hours and is somewhat similar to Busan's Gamcheon Village and Seoul's Bukchon Village.

Exploring the Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village was a cultural immersion despite the shops being closed during my visit. Walking through this quaint village, frozen in time, evoked a profound sense of tradition and appreciation for Korean culture. The well-preserved hanok houses and alleys whispered tales of the past, offering a glimpse into ancient Korean lifestyles. Even without the bustle of shops, the ambiance was rich with history, making it feel like a step back into a bygone era. The village's authenticity in preserving Korean heritage was striking, leaving a lasting impression of the country's deep-rooted traditions.. Visited during the month of February this year.

Interesting old village with café and resto ,This is a beautiful traditional village since Silla dynasty. There are some traditional restaurants in this area that worth to try. The scenery here is so calm and nice. Here, you also see Woljeonggyo bridge that across the Nam river. A should-try experience here is wearing hanbok and walking around. You will have so many beautiful and meaningful photos.

If you want to know more about Korean history and culture you must pay a visit to this place. It's about 1.5hours direct from Busan. I did a day tour/visit which is definitely not enough to see and know more about the place. There are several spots to visit around in the area. Both day and night have different view. Photos consist of my visit to the different spot in the town. However I went on a weekend which they have events in several places around the town which makes the traffic really congested.
