정의 서울특별시 마포구 합정동과 영등포구 양평동을 연결하는 다리.

개설 양화대교는 두 차례에 걸쳐서 건설되었는데, 구교인 제2한강교는 한강 위에 가설된 세 번째 교량이다. 이후 교통량이 증가함에 따라 확장공사를 실시하였으며, 서울의 서부지방과 인천·김포공항·인천공항 등을 연결하는 관문교량의 역할을 하고 있다.

형성 및 변천 1965년 1월 25일에 건설된 구교는 길이 1,108m, 너비 18m로 건설되어 서울 서부와 수도권 서부를 연결하는 역할을 하였으며, 서울에서 서부전선의 문산으로 물자수송을 원활하게 하기 위한 군사적 목적이 더 컸다.

이후 급격한 교통량 증가와 대형교통의 빈번한 통과로 말미암아 교량의 노후문제가 발생하여, 이 문제를 해소하기 위하여 1982년 2월에 왕복 8차로의 신교를 준공하였다. 기존의 다리를 확장하고 입체시설도 개선하여 현재의 교량으로 개축되었다.

구교의 상부구조는 폭 18m, 길이 1,053m인 강판형교(steel plate girder) 및 콘크리트 박스거더(concrete box girder)로 구성되어 있고, 신교는 폭 16.2m, 길이 1,053m인 강판형교로 구성되었다. 하부기초는 우물통 파일기초 또는 직접기초방법을 적용하였다.

교통량의 원활한 소통을 위하여 교량 양측에 접속 입체교차로를 가설하였는 바, 복합클로버형을 채택하여 좁은 면적으로도 완전입체교차시설의 기능을 충분히 수행할 수 있도록 하였다.

산업 발달과 물동량 증가로 교통이 대형화하여 2등교인 구교는 이용에 불편을 초래할 뿐만 아니라 시설물의 노후화에 따른 안전이용이 우려되어 1996년 6월부터 구교의 성능 개선과 신교의 보수를 위한 공사를 시작하여 2002년 8월 14일에 교량의 성능개선을 완료하였다. 이와 함께 일산·마포대교·여의도·인천국제공항 쪽에서 양화대교 방향, 양화대교에서 마포대교 방향으로 진출입하는 램프도 함께 개통되었다.

현황 2002년의 성능개선 공사가 완료됨과 동시에 양화대교의 차량통행량은 급증하였다. 2001년까지는 일일 평균 8만여 대의 차량이 통과하였지만 2002년부터 차량통행량은 증가하여 2009년에는 일일 평균 13만 4,710대가 양화대교를 통행하였다.

한편 교량 밑으로 대형 선박이 쉽게 통과할 수 있도록 교량 중앙의 112m 구간과 이를 지지하던 교각 2개를 해체한 후 로제아치교를 대신 설치하는 구조개선공사가 2010년부터 2011년 말까지 진행된다. 이는 경인 아라뱃길을 통한 서해로의 뱃길회복에 발맞추어 대형선박의 한강 내 운항을...
