There are no sources about the monastery's origins, it is generally thought that it was founded by count Wilfred II of Barcelona, whose funerary inscription was found within the monastery in 1596. The monastery is documented from 977; in 985 it was sacked and destroyed by the Muslim troops of al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir.

Restorations were begun in 1096, through donations from Geribert Guitard and Rotlendis, and a new monastic community arrived. In 1117, Sant Pau became a priory of the monastery of Sant Cugat. By the 13th, a new cloister, church and monastic quarters were built. In 1377, the monastery consisted of a prior and eight monks, which declined in the 15th century to consist of three monks.[An initial monastic meeting for the Terragona province occurred in 1577 and such meetings would continue from 1594 to 1835.

The monks were removed upon the secularization of monasteries by the Spanish government in 1835.[2]

It was declared a National...

A wonderfully charming and insightful visit behind the architecture and meaning behind the intricacies of this Romanic church. This hidden location is mostly known to the locals but needs to be apart of one of the essential places to visit in Barcelona! The equally charming and charsmatic guide, Jordi Xavier, literally brought the church to life with his impressive chanting and knowledge of the church. Not only was he engaging but he also made the visit fun and interesting. Unfortantely, visits are only being done in Catalan but if you ask questions in Spanish, there is no problem with communication. The visit was completely free but a donation of 5€ is recommended and well worth it. I would definitely recommend visiting this hidden gem but be aware that the entire tour will be given in Catalan. I hope that once the popularity of this sight is demonstrated, that they can add other languages...

Beautiful structure of a former Benedictine Monastery. Sant Pau del Camp is Barcelona's oldest preserved church probably built around the 9th century. A description by catalunya.com states "it has a structure in the form of a cross, with three apses and an octagonal tower in the transept. The interior is covered by simple barrel vaults and a dome in the transept. It has a Greek cross layout and the south arm of the transept has a door with a pointed arch. There is a group of three semicircular apses. The façade is ornamented with Lombard arches and is topped with remains of fortifications."

Nice to see from the outside. Not really worth going inside. 11th century Benedictine monastery. Much of its architecture is Romanesque, making it one of the oldest buildings in Barcelona. Typical of the Romanesque is its massive walls and tiny windows, in comparison to the Gothic style which employed huge windows thanks to advances in engineering. A delightful aspect of the Romanesque is the creativity of the capitals (the decorative crown at the top of a column) with animals and mythological creatures, each capital having a unique design.
