Azkuna Zentroa, formerly known as Alhóndiga Bilbao, is a remarkable cultural and social center that stands as a testament to Bilbao’s transformation into a vibrant, modern city. Originally a wine warehouse, the building has been masterfully redesigned by the French designer Philippe Starck, blending the old with the new in a way that feels both innovative and respectful of its history.

From the moment you enter, you’re struck by the eclectic architecture. The space is vast and open, with 43 unique columns supporting the central atrium, each designed in a different style, creating a visually stunning and dynamic environment. The interplay between the original industrial structure and the contemporary additions makes for an atmosphere that is both warm and intriguing.

Azkuna Zentroa is much more than just a building; it's a cultural hub that offers something for everyone. The center hosts a wide variety of events, from art exhibitions and film screenings to workshops and concerts. There’s also a well-curated library, a rooftop swimming pool with a glass bottom that offers a unique view of the atrium below, and several spaces for dining and socializing. This variety ensures that whether you're an art lover, a fitness enthusiast, or just looking for a place to relax, Azkuna Zentroa has something to offer.

What makes Azkuna Zentroa truly special is its role as a community space. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike can come together, explore new ideas, and experience the best of contemporary culture. The center's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity is evident in its diverse programming, which caters to a wide range of interests and ages.

In summary, Azkuna Zentroa is a must-visit destination in Bilbao. It’s a place where history and modernity converge to create a vibrant, welcoming space that celebrates culture in all its forms. Whether you're there to explore, learn, or simply unwind, Azkuna Zentroa offers a unique and...

Azkuna Zentroa is located in the heart of the city and is one of Bilbao’s most representative buildings. Originally a wine store, designed in 1909 by Ricardo Bastida, it is now a spectacular multi-purpose civic centre dedicated to leisure and culture, and its transformation was undertaken by Phillippe Starck. Azkuna Zentroa is an innovative, multi-disciplinary space that is full of life and provides opportunities for knowledge, a wide variety of cultural representations, physical activity, and recreation. Among its most striking features are the 43 columns designed by Starck and created under the supervision of the Italian set designer Lorenzo Baraldi.

Azkuna Zentroa has a multimedia library, a physical activity centre, a swimming pool, and exhibition room, an auditorium, movie theaters, a multi-purpose hall, restaurants, cafeterias, and a shop. A number of events are held here, such as the Gutun Zuria...

Definitely worth a visit if you're in Bilbao, especially if the grey skies are discharging onto the noble town, for it is under cover, strange sculptures in the surrounding pedestrian area excepted. Recommened for families with small kids as they can charge around protected from the elements and the traffic. The centre consists of three modern blocks designed by Philippe Starck within a majestic former wine warehouse. Marvel at the columns from around the world supporting the blocks which house a sports centre (look up and see the folks swimming 20 metres above you), cinema, art exhibitions, bars, restaurants and an extensive library. It is a great place to work or just while away a few hours reading the wide range of media available in the comfy leather sofas and seats - kind of like a big coffee house, but without annoying background music (or buckets of frothy concoctions purporting...

What an amazing space. Virtually accidently discovered it while walking through Bilbao. It was a bond house for wine at one stage and the exterior facade has been preserved while internally they have created exhibition spaces and a cinema underground with a public library and a fitness centre built as seperate structures internally. There is a Basque crafts shop and a Bar then a restaurant also included in the building. When we visited there was an exhibition in the space two floors down and then a fascinating exhibition in the library detailing the design work behind a wonderfully drawn Basque Childrens book. Del Bosco and Bruegel paintings were the inspiration. You can even take a lift to the roof and ( whilst not encroaching on the fitness clubs sunbathing Zone, get another perspective on the design. A no cost amazing space

In 1905 a very young Ricardo Bastida was commissioned to build a new wine exchange in Ensanche de Albia quarter, Bilbao, and he outlined a large functional advanced industrial building. In the 1970s, it was left abandoned & waiting to be put to a new use, the 43,000 square metres (462848.15 sq.ft.) of Azkuna Zentroa arose out of the old wine warehouse. So on the outside 1905 and you enter into a beautiful current cultural center. The thing that's amazing are the 43 columns (pillars) inside the structure. They represent millions of columns, and infinity of cultures, architectures, wars and religions through which man has passed throughout history per my guide. Also no columns of the same material or similar style are put near each other.
