Late this freezing cold January Sunday afternoon we visited this magnificent 17th century castle in the very center of the old town of Brig, that previously was unknown to us. We were all by ourselves and could enjoy the sun progressively setting on the western facade of the castle with shadows of the naked trees being projected on the pale yellow color of the building. Our only regret was that we had not arranged for a visit to the interior but that will be a good project for a future visit.

I haven't been inside the castle and only been to the courtyard and outside park of palace. It is an impressive palace and courtyard. If you are in Brig and have 30-45 mins, take a short walk from Bahnof through the old town to the palace. It is totally worth your time. You can have a guided tour for which you will need more time. Hopefully next time, I will be able to do it.

It was built from 1658 to 1678 at the behest of the baron Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper in Barok style. It has a large internal courtyard (1280 m2,) currently used for concerts and shows) surrounded by a colonnade with three orders of arches with Tuff columns inspired by the Italian art of the Renaissance. The aim of the Baron was to build a fortified residence in Brig, to house his merchandise that passed from the Sempione pass (not to forget that in Gondo there were the gold mines always managed by the same Baron), easily accessible from the 1930s thanks to a mule track, the Stockalperweg, also built by him. The ensemble is however heterogeneous and combines various styles: Gothic buildings, gardens reminiscent of French villas with towers crowned with large metal onion domes. And just the towers of the Castle Stockalper, which represent the symbol of the city, are a tribute to The Legend Of The Wise Men: Baron Stockalper called the three towers by their names. Inside the castle you can see a hall with coffered ceiling (of the eighteenth century), the chapel, the Hall of the Knights (containing a gallery of portraits) and the Hall of the Three Wise Men.To the west of the building lies a large garden, which you can reach from the courtyard, through an artistic wrought iron gate.

We visited the castle today with a group of 6 and took the guided tour. The castle itself is quite large and is approximately the size of two large buildings put together with hundreds of rooms but unfortunately the one hour guided tour only gives guests limited access to view the rooms. The tour guide could be slightly louder as I struggled to hear most of what was being said a lot of the time. There is a free museum available to visit at the end of the guided tour which gives information on the history of the castle and the people who lived there. There are no family tickets for guided tours and it is not possible to view the inside of the castle without a tour guide. Guided tours are only available in Swiss German. All other languages can be found on information boards in the free museum on the ground floor near the ticket desk. Overall the experience was not too bad. I would suggest that the tour contains a range of different places in the castle, for example chambers, bedrooms, modern day conference rooms, etc and not just the most commonly used rooms...

Why is the public tour in German is CHF10 and in English is CHF130? It discourages visitors from knowing the history and it seems like they only want to welcome the German speakers.

In response to your "explaining information list out on the web":

The founder of the palace, Kasper Stockalper is said to be a successful merchant and a master of six languages. If he traded the same good for 13 times higher to non-German speakers, I think there would be no Stockalper Palace and...
