He’s one of the most important thinkers in the past several centuries and magnetic, in addition. He writes more vividly and personally than any important thinker. There would have been no Existentialism and no Postmodernism without him, and no contemporary movements of empowerment. I’ve taught him for 35 years just so my students could encounter the wildness that is their potential, too. It’s strange to see the number of pilgrims to this place where he spent summers during his most productive years. He wanted no followers but I understand the desire to be close to him and his provocations. I saw families with children, studious-looking people, eccentric-looking people, surely people writing their own wildness, people living off of his (that would be me). To be honest, the museum didn’t appeal to me. I can learn about Nietzsche elsewhere. But seeing the room where he lived and wrote - that had unusual and deeply affecting power. Yes, it costs 10 francs and, yes, it’s only open for three hours a day (3-6pm). I’m fine with both.

A must see for any Nietzsche enthusiasts out there. As you go through the booklet that is given at the beginning, you keep immersing yourself into Nietzsche's more personal side, giving him a different dimension from the philosophical Nietzsche. Going through the museum feels like reading him, where you must piece seemingly unrelated pieces of information together in order to find an overarching story. The staff was kind and the shop has postcards and some of Nietzsche's books in different languages (mainly german, english and italian). Granted, this won't be for everyone, and in particular it's definitely quite boring for children (although they go in for free). The price can also feel a bit steep if you're not a student (10CHF instead of 5CHF). But being in the same house (in the same room!) where he was inspired to write such groundbreaking books has no price, and may even inspire you too to strive for the übermensch ;)
