Now that Taiwan has elected Tsai Wing-wen to lead for the next four years, Taiwanese will not be able to help but compare their progress and lifestyle with China. This Love River light and water display is an excellent example of where Taiwan stands in 2020 compared to its East Asian neighbors, and more specifically, where Kaohsiung stands. If Kaohsiung wants to be a world city, which it desperately does, it will need to do better. The area around this light display was very clean and safe, which is better than China, where it is dirty and full of pickpockets. But the light and water display was very lackluster and not brilliant at all. Similar sized cities in China, South Korea, and Japan do way better with far less. If Kaohsiung wants to legitimately compete with Xiamen, Busan, or Okinawa, it will have to dump more resources into a better show.
In sum, 5 stars for cleanliness and ambience, 2 stars for actual performance....
Read moreHighly recommended for runners (or couples)! The pavement along the river goes for miles and miles. I've done many 15 mile runs along this river, because it's the best place for a long run and is a nice break from the scooter filled streets.
For people who want a relaxing walk, go to the downtown section of love river near fisherman's wharf and Pier-2 Art Park (another must see).
