This POW memorial pays tribute to the Allied POWs imprisoned on Taiwan during World War II. It is set in quiet surroundings - quite a moving experience to walk the park grounds and reflect on the stories and names you see on the Wall of Honour. Some names include Major Ben Wheeler (Canadian doctor at Kinasaeki camp who is the main subject of the 1981 documentary A War Story - available for free viewing on YouTube), Lt General Jonathan Wainwright, Lt General Arthur Percival and many others - soldiers, sailors, airmen of various nationalities.
To get here from Jiufen, take a bus that goes to Quanji Temple. Get off the bus and walk across to the parking lot. A flight of steps will lead you down - follow it and go down the flight of rainbow stairs. Head right and downwards an embankment and you will find the POW memorial park. Return the same way and be sure to depart before the last bus leaves for the day - no other form of transport is available here. Google Maps gives pretty good bus timing estimates.
