i wonder if google will be able to save draft & post this time
i have 2 fully written out reviews & 1 draft saved before i scrapped all 3
to do justice to this place
& i won't teach or preach or outline the experience
this isn't summary or descriptive :
eat not fear not tread not past
a retreat -- a hostel -- a café once upon a while
mao rice isn't 🐈 naturally : muy bueno bonito flaked on 🍚
1 night in Paris the video that made Paris Hilton has nothing on 1-night-dry 🐟 (no idea which one) but damn it chipped & flicked & damn nearly flew into 👄 umami mamisita 💃
this 1-nght-dry is signature & premature preview of heaven
many many orders of casserole 🐂 slices of boeuf slices that beckon : come hither order 2 more (one table of 10 had ordered 2 then 1 more cause the boys loved it so)
every table got the beef casserole
no table erred
but this place ain't about the land flock this place about the bounty of 🌊
Japan figures into the Origin of Ss-Bu-Yian : owner was in Hokkaido, tried the 1-night-dry
technique of salt-patted on both sides (this preserves) & at SBY a dehumidifier over-night dries
result when flash-fried is a crisp in corners & a plump steaming white middle when belly is 🥢-pierced & pincered
the whole 1-night-dry (nose to tail) 🐟 is wholeheartedly, wholesomely 👄&👅-friendly (bffs actually)
ginger baby 🦑 that atlantean trifecta of pink plump & heresy to say it ain't crispy too is that sophisticated adult foodie dish with complexity that the 2 boys at table of 10 may not appreciate but i can't imagine anyone with a ceiling for flavour isn't floored by how high this dish goes
i couple all my magical meals with tart :
the must-try 🍋 juice is totally deserving of moniker
the pickled radish subtle & radical
& honestly i should've ordered 2 german tallboys & lingered far longer
bruschetta cheesy 🧀 & sauced 🍅
daily veggie medley is a must get in several portions
a couple of housekeeping notes :
bus stop right outside : 965 (from Beimen) 1062 (from Zhongxiao Fuxing)
parking (good deal of it) by SBY & along road to gate
& it's walkable from Jioufen Old Street if you're already parked up there
no reservations (as in holding tables) but you can call ahead when you're near as the party of 10 did
come right at opening of either service (11:30 & 5) or even a little ahead is my recommendation
Good Peeps Good Reaps of Good Sown Good Vibes from Every Single One of Staff
Owner unseen but felt in cycle frame & saddles Chef & Captain -- forward & bold FOH makes the tiramisu
which is firm in the middle -- consistency of 🍨
this is the shortest version of all 4 reviews i wrote
i leave you to gather from the many photos the stories i told
of the college coeds the blogger pair the table of 10
i love going to a place & the people there are having an experience & not just a meal
such warmth in hospitality such care in cuisine
it's no wonder every single time i happen by i see eager parties outside queuing
people evidently can't get enough of can't get enough (the loose translation of SBY)
tMac 🍚🐟🦑🦖

yet to be titled project but certainly a passion project of love &...
Read moreI just can't fathom why most folks rave with 5 stars; for me, it's totally overrated. The service felt like a plea just to get a bite there. Picture this: we stroll in at 7:30 pm, handed a menu, and boom – they drop the bomb that they're closing at 8 pm. Counter order and pay before even eyeing the food! The rush to clear our plates while we're still nibbling was absurd. The food? Meh. Average at best. You can score the same grub elsewhere with friendlier service and less dent in your wallet. Attitude-wise, it's almost like they're doing us a favor letting us eat there – no warm fuzzies. The only glimmer of hope was the ginger squid and grilled dried mackerel fish; the rest fell flat. Clam soup? Ordinary. Rice with bonito flakes? Delicious. But the grilled shaoxing wine pork sauce and spiced chicken? Meh and bland. Our drink options dwindled to lime juice and coffee. And get this – a cat's serenading on the roof, and a waitress casually carries it to the kitchen mid-chat. If you're holidaying nearby, maybe roll the dice, but a drive from Taipei? Nah, there are better spots. Nothing wowed my...
Read moreThe food here is okay, standard fare. My favorite dish was the dried fish, which was crispy and tasty. However, the prices are relatively high. With this price point, some people might expect something more special or more seasoned.
The restaurant gave me an Izakaya vibe, with food portions that might not fill your stomach. If it were an actual Izakaya place, I would be more satisfied because the food here pairs well with beer.
Speaking of beer, they offer three types of beer—lager, dark, and hefe weissen—from Nuremberg, Germany. It’s rare to find these in Taiwan, and I enjoyed them a lot. The food here suits beer drinking perfectly.
The environment is cute, making me think of a small hut in the jungle. However, one downside is the presence of many insects and annoying mosquitoes.
Overall, I would give them 4 stars. The taste of the food is standard, but the unique setting in Jiufen makes for an enjoyable evening. Compared to restaurants in Taipei, it’s...
