Maokong Potholes — Attraction in Taipei

"Maokong" corresponds to two Chinese characters "貓空". Translating these two characters literally will give us "cat" and "empty", which actually mis-interpret the original name. In Taiwanese, “cat” and “empty” carry similar sounds of “wrinkled” and “holes", respectively. The original name of this area is “wrinkled holes”. The holes were formed on the rocks in the creek by the running water. The rocks were worn by the water and holes were created on the rocks.
