Our first official mountain hike in Taiwan! Reaching the highest peak in Taipei is an achievement for us. There are a number of ways to reach the peak but we chose the "moderate" level of trail on our way up which is the Miaopu trail and then went down via Xiaoyoukeng trail. Choosing the Miaopu trail, there were definitely steep stairs so it was nice to have a trekking pole or two to aid our hike. Fortunately, the weather was really good on the day of our trip. It was just cold enough and foggy when we reached the peak but the sky cleared up by noon so we got a full 360 view of the other peaks and surrounding areas. I would say this mountain is good for beginners up to the novice level of hikers who want to have a quick getaway adventure from the city of Taipei. We would definitely love to hike more mountains...

Mount Qixing's main peak is the highest point in Taipei City, standing at an impressive 1,120 meters. The trail from Xiaoyoukeng Visitor Center to and from the main peak covers a distance of about 4 kilometers. The path features many stone steps, some of which are quite steep. Along the way, you'll pass through sections of lush sword bamboo forest.

The scenery throughout the hike is breathtaking, and many hikers choose to climb the mountain twice to fully enjoy the experience at the main peak. Before you begin your ascent, take a moment to visit the nearby sulfur crater at the visitor center. It's a fascinating natural feature that adds to the uniqueness of this hike.

The well-maintained trail and stunning views make this hike highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and adventure...

We decided to go after checking that it's a sunny day. We started from the xiaoyoukeng section to go up to the main peak of the qixingshan. It's manageable for the fit individuals. We met a very kind Taiwanese who gave us tips on making hikes... bring some salt candy in case you get cramps, bring enough water, etc. My kids in their 20s could have scaled the peak easily but i definitely slowed them down a lot due to my less than ideal leg. We made it to the peak and it's really a spectacular view up there. After resting a while, we took the route to lengsuikeng. Thoroughly enjoyed the breathtaking views along the way up and down. It's definitely worth going! Make sure you go on a sunny day so that you have clear view of...

On a clear day, the views from here are marvellous - you can see Taipei 101 on one side and the sea on the other - but it is also very hot! It is best to be equipped with proper hiking equipment (and adequate water) even though the trail is well-maintained. We chose to hike up from Xiaoyoukeng and down to Lengshuikeng. While many guides online say that the hike up from Xiaoyoukeng is easiest, it is actually the steepest (which is why it is the shortest at 1.6km). The trails from Lengshuikeng and Miaopu are longer and therefore less steep - do consider your fitness and hiking ability before choosing which trail to take up and down.
