Baan Thep Museum is a recent addition to the list of cultural attraction in Phrae. This private museum, opened in December 2015, features a collection of antiques which Mr Thep, its owner, has collected for more than 30 years. The exhibits include Chinese pearl inlaid furnitures, a carved wooden bookcase with ivory frets, Chinaware, brasses, armours, frog drums, Lanna bells, porcelains, and ancient clocks. In the main hall, there is a fine sculpture of Rama I, the founder and the first monarch of the reigning House of Chakri of Siam. As soon as you arrive the family make you feel so welcome - providing any help, advice, or assistance you need. Breakfast is cooked for you each day (we had chicken with ginger and Pad Ka Pow) and the family provided us with some great tips of things to see and places to eat whilst we stayed in Phrae. The rooms are at the back of the property and the rest of the area is a museum with many wood antiques. Read moreThe friendly builder's and owners' son showed me around the two museum rooms full of old interesting things. It became even more interesting when he showed me one of their hotel rooms and the amazing, sprawling wooden communal area for hotel guests. That part of the house doesn't look any more like only a house, but like an accommodating wooden organism where you can hang out and enjoy the ambience. It was cool and agreeable, and I was told that even in the hot season at noon it would be a cool, breezy space, thanks to well planned...
