This is a great meadow to visit, particularly in the Summer months. A great spot for sunbathing, especially in the evenings when most gardens have become shaded, and there are glorious sunsets to be enjoyed, watching swans landing gracefully on the water, dragonflies and damselflies, cows grazing over the other side of the river and happy people on kayaks enjoying themselves. The expanse of Friar's meadow means that it is a good place for a barbecue and also swimming is permissable - there are 3 main jettys on the bank, some 100m or so apart. The 2 jettys furthest apart up and down stream are low lying, meaning it's easy to get in and out. I've heard various opinions about swimming there, but when it's 28°c and the water looks crystal clear, then I'm obviously going in. Just be mindful as always of swans, as it's obviously their territory you're visiting. On one occasion there were rowing teams going up and down the river. Obviously, not advisable to get in then, not least because they can't see behind them, but I only this saw this once and it's obvious to see if they're out practicing for an evening, as they have patrol boats accompanying them. I would go as far to say, especially in Summer, it is even worth driving a few miles to make a day of it there if fine weather is forecast. The meadow lies alongside the Stour Valley Trail, which is a fine walking or cycling trail, so bring your bikes too if you can. A pop up tent could also be useful if you're there all day. If visiting by car there are nearby carparks, such as Waitrose or the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, and a 3-4 minute walk will get you there. Alternatively, the meadow is a 5-6 minute walk from the Bus Station on Hamilton Road, and the Railway Station is a similar distance. Bear in mind that if you're spending a number of hours there, there's no toilet facilities on the meadow but there is a public toilet by the Bus station or customer toilets at Waitrose. I've had some beautiful evenings there, relaxing getting a tan and going for refreshing swim, or unwinding with a drink or two. The place doesn't seem to have a terrible litter problem and I haven't seen anyone badly behaved. Well worth a visit. Worth bringing a camera too, especially for capturing the wildlife and sunsets.
